i used the gearing calculator thingy people have posted but i dont know how to read it 100% correctly.
anyways im gonna be using my cr500 on the street. no highway/80mph runs etc. just around town, surface streets.
just dont want to be coming on the pipe all the time. im thinking im gonna have to go way low on the rear sprocket (like 41t) but dont want to kill this thing all together in the bottom....
anyone got a good compromise on gearing ?
thanks

14/49 should be fine for you then.

I've tried it on the MX track, and it was geared too tall for where I usually ride.

i think thats a little short for the street. 1 2 3 rd gears will be all but useless.

id go

15/49

Depends on the year and countershaft size. What year 500?

Having said that, 41T would be ridiculous. If I put a 41 on my '01 it would probably just be getting on the pipe at about 100mph in 5th...

I'd just put a 15 up front, try that first.

lol thats kinda the point in my case. i dont want it coming on the pipe if im cruising...
with the 49 on the back im thinking its gonna always wanna be on the pipe everywhere i go....
guess i could try the 15 first and see how that works. ive found my rear sprocket for 33$ a piece in pretty much a 40-52 selection.
thanks

It still makes a difference what year you're referring to. I don't know the exact breakdown but early '90's models had a much lower 4th and 5th gear ratio than the later versions.

93 is back to wide ratio, 92 is close ratio

15/39 with the wide ratio tranny will get you to 100/106mph @ WFO

I have 14/39 with 17s on my motard with a '97 motor.

I rode in traffic for the first time the other day and spent most of my time in 2nd and 3rd gear.

Gonna hook a speedo this weekend and get a top speed run

the 92 will drive you nuts on the street. I run 15/48 in the desert with mine and can get tapped out in long washes.

15/46 for street on the 92.

ya thats what i figured.... was gonna run with a 15/45 to see how it works.. really not gonna be riding highway for sustained speeds. all side streets etc. so nothing really over 40mph...
thanks
