e start

AJ should get with the e start program... but make it have a 300w lighting coil, then start using the stator coils as the starter motor(itll need a fancy brushless controller thingy)
might need a decomp but it would weigh less than any other e start
its been done before, but i dont think on a bike yet
AJ if you do this and it works you owe me one

if it was solid state and if theres 8 poles on the generator that make 12 volts and 200 watts
give each pole 12 volts for just a second so it dosent burn out but still will start it
thats 1600 watts, or just over 2 horsepower
133 amps @12 volts

you wont be able to crank for more than a few seconds, if that but it would work for sure with a decomp, and maybe without
as long as your bike is jetted right and works properly it would work awesome
for those those jumping cars its common to run as much as 72 volts to the 12 volt electric hydraulic pumps for a short time to get huge power
now it just needs someone to make it

I've a semi completed ignition cover that will eventually take the KTM 250 / 300 ES. But I''m also awaiting a look at the Gas Gas 2t ES set up - this gets rid of the extra direction change in the drive that the KTM has.

Both of those ES set ups rank as factory made Garage Engineering. Basic add ons. The CREs have a stator - Pretty much the same thing as E Lines were, from what I've seen, so I've plenty of available E power, and there are a lot of new, midget batteries starting to surface.

We are also patterning the inner clutch cover to take a starter forward /under the reed block / carb, and another that will situate a starter roughly in line with the KS shaft location. We will probably try a CRF450x starter, as it's bloody tiny. There may well be smaller units out there as well. Secondary mountings will have to be welded to the centre cases, or a bracket from the ignition cover / case saver brackets, but neither are a big ask.

So, eventually, we'll see what is more appropriate. The ignition cover set up is easiest, and I'm sure we can do a better job than KTM did.

ES is the part of the reason I did my decomps - a decomp will make it easy to turn over with a tiny starter. I'm getting to the point that my knees are demanding a magic button. With the decomp and short KS levers I use, a 5 year old could kick the bike, but , as my knees don't bend past 90 degrees, I have trouble in difficult situations in my type of terrain. So a button is coming. Or another bike, and I don't really want that.

the 450x starter would be the go i was thinking along the same lines bear how would you go running it on the clutch ring gear with a idler setup like the x there looks to be a market if you get it right

I dunno.... a well tuned CR500 starts pretty easily with the kicker...

11 year old James Lewis and our little buddy Paul Stoffers can attest to that.

True, Mine starts pretty easy if you ride it at least once a week. But if you ever let it sit it becomes a real bitch...

X2
mine is first kick hot or cold, needs a few "primer kicks" cold tho sometimes more if its flodded, laid upside down for a minute+

I'm not young, but I'm not particularly unfit. Just somewhat fucked up.

I am classified by my government now as disabled, I only just received a light blue disabled pensioners card in the mail  :?  - yet I work for myself, for one of Oz's leading suspension companies and as a teacher with disabled children. My legs are that fucked up I walk with crutches when any distance more than a few metres is involved. And I don't draw a dime from the public purse.

And I'll ride till I Cark it.

As I've written, my bike is easy to start - a five year old could do it, and I've started it by hand when in situations where I cannot kick it. I go on rides, with up to 20 people at times, in vicious terrain that would make it into Last Man Standing, Erzburg, Roof of Africa, Romainiacs and EWC / WEC as their extreme sections. And I'll be the only one without an ES. And after helping a lot of others get through sections, I'd kill for the magic button that they have. I find myself regularly in life risking situations trying to kick a bike over , when just pressing a button will get you going with less chance of going off a cliff. I don't think I ride in the sort of terrain that most of you blokes do.

Here's something to grasp: Over and above the displacement advantage 4ts have been given in racing (rampant bullshit that now needs to be stopped), the main reason for 4ts uptake ( besides no longer being foo foo bikes, so the handicap they were given at least encouraged the manufacturers to make real racers out of them) is that magic button on so many of them and no premixing. Yes, that's what gets sales - ease of use and convenience.

KTMs biggest seller and quickest 'sell out bike' has been the 300ES - the second people didn't have to kick , they started selling probably twice as many 300s / 250s (and these bikes have always been early sell outs here in OZ before that). Some wankers got their knickers in a knot over fitment of ES to 2ts, all they had to do was remove it - that's how I got a couple of KTM ES set ups to play with. It's a pity KTM didn't do a better job of it, but it's easy to sort out.

When, and if, we finally see DFI'd 2ts, we'll see integrated ES's , that were designed for the engine from the start, and, Horror of Horrors, oil injection as well. So the 'hard' men will get upset about that as well, I guess. But to me, having an ECU control oil injection, that gives , say 200:1 at idle, through to 20:1 at 10,000 rpm, will be the way to go.

I'm in the position to make what I want, and, to keep riding, I'll do what I have to. So I'll be completing an ES , in time. And I'll piss off the redundant KS lever as well. I can still one kick a normal 500, but pressing a button is much more logical to me, and it will keep me on a bike for as long as possible. I guess others would take up checkers or knitting, instead of do whatever they have to to keep riding.

nice bearoso but i wouldnt get rid of the kicker completly it will always be needed

Whatever we settle with, we won't delete the KS.

But I myself will remove the lever. I'm confident that anything I make will work well, and with the mini batteries that are out now (and those to come), I'm not at all worried about lack of juice. I've plenty of stator power. And if your stupid enough to not maintain your battery - well , you deserve all the greif that comes with that.

By then I'll either have a Dyna Ring Revloc, or , better still, a Clake, so I will have bump start ability - something I'd like to regain. I've only ever had the Rekluse so I could have a LH rear brake, as I can't use a foot brake. I think the Clake is a fantastic thing now, even though I was a sceptic initially - Owen at Clake is a Very clever bloke. It's a pity they are so pricey, but when you see one you'd understand why. Nothing I've ever seen in hydraulics, when applied to levers can get close to the quality of engineering and execution I see on a Clake. Brembo / Nissan etc produce absolute shit when put up against Clake. They just need to develop a folding lever set up, to perfect it. Coming from me, this is real praise - I can be quite a critical bastard when it comes to assessing peoples designs / efforts when it's done as a product for sale.

If starting it is getting to be too much, get roosty's decomp mod done to the head.

If you're not fit, you should be riding a quad.
