6 months? Hell it won't even last that long before it blows itself up.
How do you get reliable and 4 stroke in the same sentence.

nope, he isn't gomez
I was just having this discussion w/ jason the other day, I may wish to purchase one of the new yamis myself. Although the thumpers see a lot of failures on pro tracks and see a lot of failures from dumbass owners all of my homies who have thumpers wrench far less than my old 500s make me wrench. I have several friends with several years of abuse on their thumpers and have only done basic maintenance. the modern thumper has proved itself to me.

this is some silly rubbish. come back in 15 years son and we can talk about how well your 2010 450 has treated you . oh sure it will last 100 years under a sheet in the garage. probly thousands of 15 year old well used cr500 still running strong on original parts, hell theres probly thousands of 20 year old abused cr500 on original parts. take a look through thumper talk my freind, EVERY page is littered with bike problems and all the damn bikes are nearly new (kicker start gear broke, valves are loose, motor wont start when its hot, rod broke, timing chain busted, and the best one yet is the '09 honda has tranny issues what a piece of garbage. that new yamaha will probly be a kickass bike, for the short time its alive. but were not telling you anything you dont already know

well guys, that wasn't nearly the shit storm I was expecting
you know what it comes down to for me.... I've never had anything new, I've always ridden old broken junk and had to throw more money at it than its worth. I take my fresh badass gen-3 out for a couple rides and my fork seals are leaking, and I need to replace one of the fork caps since a previous owner busted off the adjuster, I also need to replace the brake pads. My clutch basket was worse than I thought when I installed it and It disengauges when it feels like. this in a nice '03 chassis and the motor got EVERYTHING except a clutch basket. Basically thats about $500 more I need to spend besides the desert tank I need to have the capacity to match the distance my riding buddies on 450s get w/ stoke 1.8 gal tanks and one of my wheels is cracked.
Not to say I'm going to get rid of my gen-3, I have no desire to do so, but I would for once like to buy myself something new, and I mean brand new, not kinda new with a refirbished 22yo motor in it, but NEW.

at the end of the day, a properly maintained bike that isn't overly abused will last a good long time. A bike that is poorly maintained, poorly tuned and reved to the limit constantly will not last very long. 500, 450, 2 stroke, 4 stroke air or water cooled, these rules still apply. A 500 might put up with the bad longer than most, but whatever will kill a 450 will also kill a 500, it might just take longer.
If I buy a brand new bike, properly maintain, take good care of it and keep on top of things, like re-ring every 2 years, keep on top of valve adjustments, etc. it should last a good long time the same way the thumpers owned by several of my friends have.

Oh blah blah blah. You want some cheese with that whine, there Danny? Look, u know any used bike will take some tinkering...prolly cuz the PO was a tool and deserves to have his toolbox welded shut. But when all is done, you built yourself a bad ass Gen3 for 1/4 (if that) of the cost of a new 4 smoke - provided you didn't cut any corners. And you can spank the majority of them to boot!dannygraves wrote: it comes down to for me.... Actually, I think Danny is 0 and like 836 against thumpers, just to get the facts straight...hoofarted wrote: And you can spank the majority of them to boot!

I think MSRP would be higher yet on that 2010 YZF450...100hp honda wrote:mfdb has poor danny brainwashed into thinking he would be better off with a $8k bike in the garage
I dunno, I'd feel pretty sketchy about dropping that amount of coin and no warranty either. I paid $5300 for my 01 CR250 in 2001 and that made me nervous as hell knowing I was buying a "race" bike and there was no warranty available.

That may have to do more with the pilot...I admit I am not that great and easily get spanked by some thumpers...but bike to bike, 500 wins. Look at the lap times from the SH testing. Riders were consistantly 3-5 seconds faster on the 500...and when they got back on the 4-pokes, they felt "slow"...M.F.D.B. wrote:Actually, I think Danny is 0 and like 836 against thumpers, just to get the facts straight...hoofarted wrote: And you can spank the majority of them to boot!

Look all the way at the botton of the page under "other"...
By the way, "no warranty" doesnt mean you wont get "good faith" help...Honda is well known for this...
