Danny I think tommorrow I should call that dude, tell him we don't care about the shitty sheetrock work in his garage, or that he doesn't like to wear a shirt, we want pics of the bike!

1990 CR 500 CDI

Post by CR500PHIL »

Is CDI units from 1989 to 2001 the same? Specifically I am wondering if the coil and CDI from a 1997 CR 500 engine will work on a 1990 CR 500 engine? Thanks ...

Cool Head Cylinder Head in Gen1

Post by CR500PHIL »

Cool head cylinder heads claim lower engine temps but they look higher than stock heads. My question is has anyone tried to install a cool head into a Gen 1 conversion - given that engine head space is already in jeopardy. Will the cool head work at all in Gen 1 conversion without modifying the gas tank?

the only thing in jeopardy is your plug clearance with your cap on...depending on how much you tilt your engine a shorty plug will most likely fit...but you would have to take measurements before buying it for SURE!...cause i don't know how big these 'cool heads' are mind you...

unless you buy it to run an alky dome, a coolhead is a waste of money.

on a gen 1 you use the stock lower mounts so theres no tilting involved right?

Coils

Post by CR500PHIL »

Will the coil from a 1987 CR500 work on a 1990 CR 500 engine? I bought a 1990 CR500 engine - just bored to 91 mm, ported, etc - let the project begin!

Carb Float Height

Post by CR500PHIL »

I think I know the answer but I want to be sure - is the float height in a carb specific to the carb or the application? In oher words if I took a PWK 38 from a CR250 and put it on a CR 500 would I need to change the float height or just the jets? Logically I would think the float height is specific to the carb and I would just need to rejet.

just the jets, maybe the needle. 250s and 500s use a close tune, so you could try it as it, then just fine tune to get it perfect.

Electronics

Post by CR500PHIL »

I have a 1990 CR 500 motor which I will use in a AF project. I asked before about the electronics and someone said the electronics from 1987 onwards are the same. Well I am looking at a CDI from a 1988. My question is will it work without modifications to the wiring or will I have to fabricate the connections? Is the coil the same as well - wiring and functionality?

let me ask you, why would I tell you all of the electronics from '87+ interchange if they didn't?
some of the timing curves in the cdis changed over the years, but they all interchange.

CDI

Post by CR500PHIL »

I want a CDI that will work with the 1990 (had a 1990 CDI) so that I do not have to fool around with the timing. What year range has the same timing curve as the 1990?

there were very slight variations, any year '87+ will work fine
