On a track or on ST I know I would be faster on a smoother less brutal bike.

A few months back I went out with a guy who was riding a YZ250F and he flat owned my ass on the trail, the only place I could smoke him was on the asphalt on the way to the ST. The guy was an awsonme rider tho, in that situation someone like him would be faster on my 500 and I would be faster on his bike.

Face it the fourstokes are more forgiving, smoother and flat easier to ride than the 500. I dont even care if its a 500 in a gen 5 frame, unless you are a flat pro you aint gonna be any faster on the 2 stoke.

The only guy Ive ever personally seen ride a 500 to its full potential on a track is DESTO and hes as close to a pro psycho as you are gonna get.

I wouldn't mind a new 450 for MX use, but I'd still prefer a 250 2t or 300 EXC with some flywheel weight for nasty woods riding, like what I experienced in Pittsburgh.

I only had the money for one bike, and although it isn't the best choice for most all of the riding I do, I love my 500 to death and it's never getting replaced. Next year I might try a set of supermoto wheels though...

Like I said before horses for courses, the nitrous is only used in the dunes which is smooth and frankly unless whooped out no skill is needed to drag up a hill (perfect for me).

A perfect example of how power is useless without skill was pismo this year, the drags were whooped out to hell and stoffers on his tired 65 psi compression AF owned me over and over again as I just couldnt keep the button on.


I love power and I love the feeling of getting pushed off the seat, nitrous up a massive dunes does it for me, kinda like the 60 yr old that buys a Z06, he drives it nowhere near it potential but occasionally gets on it :D :cool: :D

Wow Bob, you actually HELPED me prove my point!! How many EXPERT or "A" guys are on this list?? How many show to the group rides?? Now look at how many slow ass, can barely ride a tricycle guys like me do??

The 500 caters to the big ego, little skill, far too much and therefore attracts many poeple who look for power to cover up their lack of skill. Telling people they would be faster on a 450 is a great way to get these types of guys panties in a wad, like we see here today. Few and far between is a man who has the skill to slap a 500 around the way you describe, for the rest of us, in many cases, we would be faster on a 450...

That being said, I keep my 500 around for just the reasons I have said. Its the choice I pick for shooting hills (racing) and big high speed stuff. I pull it out once in a while if someone owns me on my 450, but both instances are rare.

Its too bad I was right when it comes to thumpers. Origionally, I expected this 450 to explode 6 months after it was new like all you die hard guys like to "think", and put the 500 in it. But it didnt, so now I have to look for some flat billers bike that did, so I can AF it and convert to E85 and have something that handles worth a damn cuz a steely sure doesnt. Then you will see me on the 500 more often.

Till then, like I said before, in the tight nasty stuff or MX I will continue to plug along half as tired as you on my "slow POS 450"...

I'm a dune guy, and a heavy person, and the cr500 is the shit for me and my application. A ported one is the true way to go, but a stock one works. I have always said the cr500 is a dune machine. I got all kinds of flack when I said that on the other board. I still say it all the time, a cr500 can't be used to it's potential in woods. They work, but a wr250 is better there. Of course most non dune guys and some that only drag race the dunes don't understand the way the cr500 can dominate the dunes. I don't spend all day drag racing the hills, I ride the back dunes, carve the giant bowls and occasionaly blast a big hill. People that use the cr500 for single track are the same ones that say things like "you can't use all the power the cr500 has" and "porting is stupid because the cr500 has more power than you can use, dial in your suspension and you will be faster". None of that applies to me and my application, I could use a cr1000 at times where I ride. And the peeps that say "dunes are a straight line with no turns and it takes no skill to ride there" only see the drags at Dumont and have no clue about what I do in the dunes. I don't care if a 450 is faster, better for racing, easier to ride etc., for me and my application, the cr500 is better and an af version is perfection.

MFDB, you just stated that you are not an expert, no wonder you 450f is still running.
I don't care what you do on a bike, but how long... most of the top guys here ride at least 2 hours HARD 2 or 3 times a week.

A 450f WILL NOT LAST under these conditions.

I dont know ANYONE who is an expert racer who keeps a bike more then a year, 2 or 4 stroke isnt the factor, its TECHNOLOGY and chasis WEAR AND TEAR bone head...

Thats pretty funny as every Hoon I've met is pretty humble, even if they ride like the wind, and the first person that comes to mind when the word "Big Ego" is spoken is you. Most CR500 riders I know are weekend riders,fat, "C" skill who want to ride...not wrench... and want the biggest grin, for the least amount of money. They dont over compensate with $60k trucks ( allthough some could pay cash for one, and not finance it)Dont wear "Flatbiller" riding gear, or have a house full of pitbulls. Too each their own I guess.

That makes me wonder, what about those fmx guys? I notice almost all of them ride 250 2 strokes, why? And what about their bikes, are they all old? I see most are Hondas, do they just have 10 '07 cr250's sitting in the garage, or do they constantly have the old ones rebuilt to be fresh and worthy of being used for comps? I trip out on how they are plastered all over the advertising pages of TW Motocross, standing with their 2 strokes or jumping them. Then you see a fmf add with a 4 stroke muffler and a 2 stroke pipe, what the hell is that shit?

I went to the 500 because I felt like I had done everything I could on a 250, I am 6 4 220# and was getting killed in the sand and hills, especially if it was wet.

I put my 500 together for half of what a new 450f would cost.... not sure what ego and skill have to do with it.

I am not a skilled rider, period. I am a weekend rider who takes it easy because I have to make it to work on monday.
Even on my gen-4 with a stock 500 motor I have a lot of trouble keeping up with guys on 450s in the hairy shit. I ride with some guys who obviously are not in as good of shape as me, but they ride longer, with less arm pump and less physical strain. I spend more time and effort contolling my bike on the trails than just having a good time.

the dunes are a whole different story... its WFO 24-7 at dumont and that is where I can have fun hitting my powerband and breaking the rear loose. I barely get to hit my powerband on the types of trails we ride ecause I usually end up off the trail, ask Justin, he sees it.

I weigh in a 185 clothed with steel toe boots on, so I think its safe to say I'm 190 geared up. I don't need 500 power to pull my skinny ass up a rocky hill. I guarantee out at apex I would be way faster on a xr200.

When I bought my gen-3 chassis, I was planning on keeping it with the cr250 motor, but that motor was a basket case.. :roll:

I'm not taking sides, the cr500 is a great and rock solid reliable machine, but I just want to have more fun on the trails.
