That looks really good. Do you have any pics of the Y from the front?

Thanks.
This is all I have with me as I'm on the road in Wash DC, I should have it back when I get home Tuesday so I will try and snap some pics before I leave for Hawaii Thurs....

Ported&Polished wrote:That is cool. If I was gonna guess how to make that jig, this is how I'd do it. Using the stock cr500 frame, you bolt the tubing peices into the forward mount, the bottom mount and th rear swingarm mount, then weld in the cross members. Then just take it out, bolt it into the new alloy frame, and tweak until the front mount location is in the proper spot. Is that what you did?
Exactly....you're going to laugh how I got the tubing for the rear though. My local metal supply had something close for the front, I just had to drill it out to 10 m and I actually used that same tubing for the whole jig. But for the rear, I used the old stock bushings; welded them together and then cut it to the length of the engine width so it is exact. That whole jig took me about 30 mins and saved a shit load of time yanking that engine in and out a bunch of times.

That jig is Brilliant idea. And I thought I had a good idea with a bare set of spare cases............

Wow, that's some serious clearance you've got there. Are you going to do the "bat wings" like Zerofear did on his Gen 2?

Are you doing something similar to this Bob? Got any pics? :img:

That jig rocks................ Should market that thing

Nice work on the frame as well!

By " WAY smaller" I guess you're saying you modded it less, like just enough to get the pipe through.

Post a pic when you get the chance man. Thanks.

Both smaller mod, and smaller "wings"...

Cracker is in AZ racing with his brother this weekend.. I'll try to get some photos when that come back..

yes, for sure....I took about a 1/4" more out of the Y than I planned, but it is what it is at this point. I told the guy who is TIG welding it for me to gusset the top, but they wont be as big as what's pictured, I asked him if he could box it in for me....and if they are I will be trimming that for sure

Another view of " Zerofears" bike..

I think to be effective, the wing should overlap both the downtube, and the cradle tube... to tie it all together.

x2. granted, it helps the Y itself, but making it a tad longer would re-enforce the whole thing.

There's no need for that.........

...I agree....no need. Remember, stiffness is not always your friend. If you make an area stiffer than was originally intended, or stiff in the wrong location or load plane, you cause the loads (stress, strain, vibration caused excitation) to migrate elsewhere in the frame which will likely cause another area to fail prematurely in time.

The real key to a quality conversion is keeping the heat effected areas due to welding to a minimum while maintaining as many of the original features and wall thicknesses as possible (for flexure). Of course, annealing and then heat treating the frame afterwards would be the best possible insurance against any kind of materials-based failure.

so what part of the frame deforms to allow that? is the neck affected at all, or is it only the lower bars that move? im guessing any deformation is small enough to be negligable? anyone have pictures of a modified and un-modified frame side by side? has anyone completed a bike and given it a good beating to ensure no problems arise?

Look close in the lower photo, you can see the slight bow in the cradle tubes.

No important parameters are changed ( steering head angle for example) and the distance the cradle moves varies from frame to frame, but its small.

I wonder if its worth building a gen 3 / 4 it takes you guys months to get one going.................

Joe is one of those " Multi-Taskers"...

1. Work
2. School
3. House
4. Building Austin Healey w/ Small Block Ford power
5. CR500 A/F
6. The wifey was pretty ill recently, dealt with that.

He's had to basically park the bike, but is getting back to it now...

I have surprizinly few actual work hours in my bike.... I'm guessing 35 building it, and about the same thinking about the design and where shits gonna go....

Just hope it was a Healey that had a V8 in it before. Or a 4 Cylinder like the 100-4. Hate to see that done to a later model BJ8. They're worth some serious coin at auction nowadays. Wish I still had mine. :(
