Alisobob, As far as gearing im running a 14/50 combo which seems good. i used 3rd gear on most of the track and 2nd for the turns, one of the turns i almost need to use 1st ! tight track ! The last 2 seasons the track seems to be geared more for 80's as any bike bigger is just blipping the throttle then on the brakes.
a better rear tire is needed and the track conditions where not what they are on race day when the track is groomed correctly. Also i haven't ridden a 2t in 10 years so some adjustment on my part is needed.

pull that 250 ignition off and you will like the bike waaayyy more, trust me, I was the one who started the whole 250 ignition crazy and the reason behind it was sand drags, not MX. An fmf gnarly pipe has a really mellow power delivery.
Bob, I thought I explained it in the 2nd post, I've tried every arangement of gearing and always found low gearing made for a more controlable 500 and taller gearing make for uncontrolable low rpm wheelies. At higher rpm you can move the throttle more with less effect.

14/50 is a really good MX setup.

Danny do i need the whole 500 set up or can i keep the 250 stator and change the flywheel and cdi ?
and i do have a fatty pipe fitted for the bike.
so now some more fun begins, tuninging this baby in to my liking.

Danny and Mxdogger. Let me know if a flywheel helps to calm it for a race track. I am thinking a light flywheel would help delivery but make it carry the gyro into the corners. I am thinking about trying 14/52 gearing as I run on my 450. Basically 1/2 tooth lower than stock 450 gearing. Anybody with input will be appreciated. Thanks

I would go back to the whole 500 ign. What year 250 ign did you get?
The fatty and gnarly are way different pipes, I like the fatty more for the dunes, but honestly the gnarly is a more controlable and tractable pipe.

I would avoid doing the flywheel weight. the rotating mass is already the weakness of the 500 which really hurts its cornering, you'll make the cornering worse while only melowing out the hit a little. what pipe and ignition are you running, what year is your motor? what carb?
I have found 14/49 to be my favorite, which is ironic since that was the stock gearing for a number of years. I went as high as 15/45 and as low as 13/53 and after all that I just came back to 14/49, it provides a good top speed while still providing moderate power delivery and a good useable 1st gear. 14/51 in another fav of mine though, but I don't like losing that much top speed for the type of riding I do.

Stock ignition Pro Circuit pipe, PWK on one bike. Stock ignition Gnarly and PJ on the other

MXD - Let me know if you need the 500 components as I still have my working setup lying around in the garage.

the 2000 cr250 ign has nothing in common with the stock ign. just get a complete 500 ign and try that out, it really should help.

thanks for the ignition system hoofarted. i installed it and rode around the yard then took it off ! i didn't like the transition from bottom to mid like the 250 system gives. I installed a 93 analog 250 system that i like better than the 250 digital, seems mellower.
I installed the new reeds and reset the float bowl level, my jetting is unchanged from before except i had to turn the fuel mixture screw out to 2 turns from 1 1/4 turns. The bike runs great and now starts with a few primer kicks, than a good one to light it off.
I raced it last sunday in the +40 expert class, did better my 2nd moto cause i didn't get knocked down like in the first moto. finished 7th overall, i think some detuning and more seat time will have me were i want to be. the guys i race with said i should get a hero's medal just for riding that monster, man did that make me feel warm and fuzzy and wanting to beat on them

I like the 93 250 ignition, as that is what I have as well. Your next step should be to locate a FMF Fatty pipe to use - really opens it up on top! The Gnarly doesn't rev for $hit!
