I think someone mentioned that the intake and reeds off the newer CR 500 bike (1997) will fit a 1985 motor - is this correct? Then of course I can run a newer carb as well.
the carbs are all the same, the intake boots are shaped differently on the '88 and older. the '88 and older also have a longer reed cage. the '88 and older reeds and intake boot flow more and build more power.

well, the vforce isn't designed for the long runner, so I think it would have some disadvantage compared to stock. I like the throttle response from the vforce and they last forever. doubt it has contributed much to the big power from this motor though.

it should get more volume, but you have to trim the boot to match, and none of that matters anyway on a stock carb, since you can only flow as much as will fit through it. My 41mm made a big difference, but you have to modify everything else so the motor can take advantage of it.
the 500 motors have a really small reedcage for their size, but only because they we'ren't designed to rev. I believe in proper mods to get more rpm, it needs to breathe more everywhere.

I put a set of carbon tech low end on a stock 86 cage, and a set of top end ones on an 88 cage, i think the low end ones made a difference, but more uptop than anywhere, and the supposed high end ones did SFA anywhere over stock!
ya but Roostius has been telling me all about the 86 and how much power you can create from it...ah whatever, you're right....my bike is already modded to fit the 97 so why dick with an 86 right? DAMN IT! i can't make up my fackin mind...
its only the headstay and pipe hanger to change it, '00 if its out there, you're going to spend that on the '86 updating shit to make it work best. clutch cover, clutch case, basket, hub, clutches, lifter rod, bearing its getting there fast.
i didnt know of the '00 or i wouldnt have mentioned fixing the 86 stuff.
i didn't know of it til today man, i was asking you about those 86's because i did wnat an older model...but this guy was asking something like 2700$ for his complete 500 so i offered him like 700$ for it and i managed to get him to sell me the engine for 1100$ i've seriously been bugging EVERYbody for their engine...and most people do not want to sell them without the bike...
i don't even know where he's from, i've emailed like 50 guys and they either reply and i have to ask them who and what bike they have again cause i forget (i think being persistent in asking everybody pays off)...i think it's stock pipe and silencer which i alraedy have a set of...maybe the two combined can make me enough money to buy a pro circuit system...i don't hate the price, i payed 1300$ for my 97... it's not like guys are lining up in manitoba to sell their 500's and when they are they are wayyy too much money...
that's what i'm talking about! every guy i emailed who had an 88 said no thanks to my like 800$ offer...they're going for big bucks, i think this 00 will be a good deal...my buddys 86 500 was up for like 4000$ but it was a tricked out steely...3500$ for an 88 is a very good deal for you...i'd sell it in a second!
If I could shake this 2002 250 engine, I'd get it, and sell the 86 engine. By the time I get this other one back in shape, and buy a carb and pipe, I'd be way further ahead to get that 91 stuff
