I don't doubt that for the long jump and riding todays mx, ya there is deffinately no way a guy would ride the '88 or the newer steelies competitively, just wears you out, but there was also a big change when guys started standing on the bike for a whole race.
ya, I dont see for the riding im dooing that the af bike is going to replace the steel anytime soon. I've rode lots of the newer bikes, and the forks on my '88 seem to be the most comfortable. we're jumping and everything too, just not on a circuit.
With a field of 20 13 yr and under students, my cousin had to show them how not to do the double and intentionally flat landed that 250f 30 ft long of the landing as if it was the only way to ride it. I know my steel bikes arent going to do that without thrashing me.

I look at one every day laying on work bench, ask sabre he has seen them also have 2 extra cyls. These were expermental 5 years ago and we couldn't get any interested people who wanted to spend $5000. to build one I have part numbers for sleeves, and pistons in stock at present. there is a pic of one of these monsters in the approved vendor site. Where do you stand Slow? sometimes you say nothing will touch the late 80's CR500 chassis...and earlier in this post you were talking up a gen 3 CRF conversion. You have put down aluminum "tubs" in every thread on this site. Im confused!

I know that when I put my 88 motor in this 97 CR250 frame, it made a world of difference. I get better traction and this frame cuts like a knife compared to my 88 frame.

You have said that the aluminum frames are horrible in the sand...that is my favorite place to ride and is where I notice the biggest (being the best) difference.

I have to agree with Freemer, other than the vulgarity. You are regurgitating what you have read about the bikes...anyone can do that, but what you are continually saying is the opposite of what I have actually observed with my personal conversion bike...from actually riding it. If it wasnt actually better then my 88 then I would have just put the motor bck in the 88 and sold the 97 rolling chassis for a lot more then what I bought it for...but it is better and that is why so many people are doing the conversions.

Danny is right...no reason for name calling and putting someone down...we are all hoons but freemer has a valid point and I have yet to see a picture...and not one pulled from a random site on the net.

We are all proud of our bikes and post pics at a whim.

my 86 motor in my '97 AF made me a much faster, more confident and less accident prone rider! I don't see ANY way where my '86 chassis was superior besides comfort!

whats the bore and stroke dimensions on your bike in the vendor site?

when i talked to him few months ago it was a no go, atleast as far as making them in production numbers and directly bolt to cr500. back in september i compared a saber to my bottom end and the studs are wrong. i dont recall exactly how far off they are but i want to say 1/4 inch but maybe it was more, and i dont recall the details on the sleeve and other variables but those might be issues you would have to address. i think some major grinding/welding would be required to make it work

and i forgot to say, transfer tunnels wont match the case perfect so theres another issue. another thing is wrist pin, im not sure its same size. better forget about this idea :lol:

Well now that the haters have had their fit, I'm glad to see you didn't take it personally Slow. I share your dream of shutting down all the gay sport bikes out there on the street. Even my friends that are good people go into full tool mode when they start talking about how cool they are for breaking the speed limit on their flashy 4bangers. I just slide em around and beat the shit out of them when i get on em. I don't care how fast they go. I could probably beat em on my current 500 with knobbies, but I can't imagine how sick a little 100hp dirtbike on slicks would be. Thank you for sharing all that stuff you know about third hand or otherwise because first thing i do when i get some cash and stop traveling around and partying my ass off is get a 100hp 500 sumo. So these ideas are great. I will be talking to glen about something like this, but realistically I don't think the 500cc the bikes came with are being used well (at least for the street). Like previously mentioned, some spray would probably take care of any speed problems I might have.

heh, i only read the very start of the thread, and stoppped, but i know what slow is talking about... the 500 needs more power, and when you have tires that hook everything, and gearing for a hair over 100, you the stock 500s hit is easy... throttle response is great, but it doesnt snap like it does with offroad gearing a loose traction (aka great traction offroad)

that 60-100 hp hit is close to what sport bikes have... you just stay in your little 100hp band as you ride... and drop it below that when you need less. no problem on-road.

i want a upgrade... something around 100hp would be near perfect.

That'd be the cat's ass if we could get that thing to shit out 100hp reliably. :cool:
