This may sound like a stupid question, but has any tried fitting a gen3 fuel tank on a gen4 250.
If the tank fits it will solve the clearance issue, but you would most likely need to use gen3 rad shrouds.

Well, I have actually changed my own oil and do have a pair of vicegrips available but the Y/cradle look to be the easy part of the mod.

All the little dodads [pipe hangers/airbox/coil/etc] look like a PITA unless you're "fab man".

With 2 "extra" engines sitting around all I need to get in well over my head is a roller............

I think it looks like something brent-in-inland impire would build, except without all the parts falling off.

I have too much to do, and still get my alloy tank made in time for all the rides that are coming up.... Redrocket nicely loaned me his S/H modified OEM tank to see if it would fit, and a 3 gal ACERBIS ( unmodified) if I was feeling a bit cheeky to modify myself....

I slapped on the S/H unit.. it fit..... so Icalled them to order one... Spent 5 minutes trying to explain it is a CR500 AF X... finally gave the fuck up....

Called Graves..... he confirmed that more heat is your best frind when modifiny tanks.... so I went out and bought another heat gun.

Got that tank very warm.....smelled like the factory that makes Brits' dildos.... left the center relatively cool.... and with one push.... the 2" proud convex area became a 2" concave area..... tank fits like a friggin glove.. even with the standard sparkplug.

Big thanks to Mike and Danny...... tomorrow is my birthday, and now I can go ride with the boys.....

I'll get better photos when I pop it off...... Looks like I no longer need the alloy tank........

Is there a difference between the CRF250R and the CRF250X fuel tank.

I thought they were exactly the same, if there is a diff what is it.

BTW Bob that was a very tidy build for sure. regardless of how clean the donor was, it is more about the workmanship that went into building the bike, BRILLIANT.

THe "X" tanks have these little wings extending over the top radiator tanks... adds a few pints to the capacity

They say "you learn something new everyday" well that is certainly true on this site.

Bob had to call me lastnight to say how well the tank mod went, i had no internet so i couldnt portray any kind of image to bob on how i pictured what went down from his description.

Bob, does your CRF250X have the coil mounted underneath the left-hand frame spar or somewhere else? The Acerbis tank seems to be binding up on my coil. More info and pics later. Need to get the rad shrouds etc. off and have a real good look.

My coil is under the right side numberplate.... where it properly belongs....

If we need to fine tune the tank for your bike Mike, just give me a shout... and I'll come down and do it....

That seems like best practice given the limited space between the spars for the fuel tank. We're probably going to need dimple the tank a tad on the LHS to get it to sit down right. I'll call you.
