The problem with a dirty filter isn't that it plugs up- the problem is that the dirt draws the oil out of the filter.
If you get enough on there the fines will pass right through.

I ordered some stuff for my 125 from Service and also got a new OEM air filter, arrived yesterday. I was surprised to see that it was pre-oiled, and pretty well too.

now thats a new one....

the lucas is as tacky as filter oil...the shit doesnt run off, and it strings between your fingers.....
as for filter wash...i use gas to get the oil out, then soap and water to get the dirt out.....working great for me so far.....but some filters will disintegrate in gas.....which makes me wonder what happens to them if any fuel blows backward through the carb, which does happen....

exactly my thoughts...is the $10 you are saving on a cheaper filter really a savings at all? NOT....
on a side note, the uni is 2 layer. the outer layer has been caked SOLID with dusty dirt, and the lucas catches it all....the yellow inner filter RARELY sees any dirt.......

Sea sponge and Gorilla glue.
Doesn't matter as long as you DO THE MAINTENANCE.
Uni & BelRay for me.

I used to do the bel-ray uni thing, but I got sick of cleaning up the spoo that comes out of the air box.
The residual kerosene on the filter gets into your bucket with the oil in it which just makes the problem worse.
I have been using the PJ1 spray with good results- and a FLO filter which comes with a course outer sleeve that you can replace at a race.

I've been sold on that set up for about 3yrs now. I'll buy the Flo just to get the 2 outer pre filters that come with it. Use it on all the bikes.
Also agree with Mojo's comment.

I've been using twin air filters with no-toil. Had great results so far been using this for many years. Never had any issue. Filters last great and never fall apart because no solvents.
I've also always sprayed the inner of the airboot with white grease just in case and I've never seen/felt any dirt or grit in the grease there.
Now there are no sand dunes here. So that's a non issue.
I also typically clean/change the filter almost every single ride/race

Std ( got a lot of them) and UFO (the same..). Whatever good quality filter oil I have, currently Silkolene.
I fit filter skins, and as I have foam in all the airbox vents and across the top of the airbox - I ride in a Lot of dust - I can go through 6 or more (one only at a time) filter skins, yet still have a near pristine airfilter.
It gets to the point that I feel guilty about not cleaning the filter - then I clean it with Mineral Turps, then liquid soap. I've used a Neoprene cage seal for ages, but still can't stop myself from using grease just at the contact points.
Motorex have this cleaning fluid that you pour on the filter, squeeze away at, wash under the tap then let dry. The oil stays in the filter. Plenty of people use it, but I'm a bit wary as I've done filters at 2 days and the 4 day and you still see grit in the filter, and some of it gets from the outside to the inside during the washing process. I guess it's far better than a clogged airfilter, and can be done quickly, but I still not comfortable about using it on My bike.

the bonding material is fuel/gas resistant.
