I totally agree.Im running 14,46 which actually lets me use the power in 2nd and 3rd and get traction.i can lug it in 3rd ,give it full throttle and it wont even bog. pulls hard like a 4poke with any load in any gear and the wind out is much better.5th gear bogs but i never get to see it.love it. i just cant understand how people use 14/51 gearing. ive tried it on a mx track and its unusable power unless your in 4th or 5th. its the fastest bike at our local track (hardpack)
I have been advocating tall gears forever.
The 500 doesn't rev as fast as a little bike.
More like a diesel Load it up and use the torque.
Back when the stealhy flywheel weights were the rage, I refused to increase the gyroscopic effect, and geared taller, to reduce the mechanical advantage.
The last 500 I bought had 13-51 gears on it... damn it ran like a slug, hit so fast it revved right through the powerband and then proceeded to fall on its face.
then I threw a 15- on the front and wow.... way diffent animal...
the stock 500 peak power is short, ~ 1800 rpm compared to the 4 jokes with 3000 rpm wide peak power bands.
tall gears stretch it out and then the shift recovery and shift frequency is much better
