if it has the 7.3 i would think it would be equivalent to a 3/4 or one ton truck. They didn't put the diesels in a half ton chassy. Check to tow rating on it. Would be a kick ass rig though with all the room inside.

Yeah that's why I am looking at them is for the room. I love my truck but don't like having to leave stuff in the bed for some low life to come steal it.

No kidding. When I was a kid i'd take the truck and bike out somewhere, go ride and leave the truck unlocked. Not think anything of it. Now I wonder whats going to be gone that I cant lock up or how many windows will get broke.

My dad has a 2000 Excursion Limited with the 7.3.

we tow a 24 or 26 foot enclosed trailer (empty weight is 8000 lbs) with cars, packed full of parts, etc. and it pulls it without an issue. biggest thing with those big trailers is trailer brakes. an excursion has no problem pulling 15,000 LBS safely, as we have done it.

I have an 03 Excursion with a 7.3. Great truck - now that I have went thru it. Your best bet is to go check out ford-trucks.com and do some reading in the Excursion section. The X will pull a lighter tongue weight trailer w/o issue. I have a 28' WW with a 1150lb tongue weight and found myself fixing all the Excursion's flaws. The truck does come on a 3/4 ton chassis but the springs are softened up for a cushier ride for all the soccer moms it was intended for. I found the #1 mod to this truck is swapping the crap leafs for some V/B or X Code from a F250 and tossing in a set of Bilsteins. Note: the majority of X's didnt come with a rear sway bar (wtf was Ford thinking?) Added one of those too. Be sure to check out the front end. With 55k on the ODO, that thing is near-new...or should be! Ball joints are notorious for failure on all Super Duty chassis. Make sure you check em. Pay keen attention when test driving. The stock X with worn components will wander all over the road...ask me how I know ;). And the stock 7.3L X is a bit of a slug. Definitely add a tuner (DP-Tuner is the best IMO), open up the exhaust, and air and you'll notice a huge difference. Makes the 7000lb beast light on its feet. All in all, its a great truck and 20+MPG (unloaded doing 70) is not uncommon. 15-16 while towing 12k behind me to boot. And you cant beat being able to pile in the whole family and tow your toys. Plus, the rear seat comes out, 2nd row folds flat and you can carry a stack of 4x8 plywood - real bed size! If u have any other questions, let me know...and definitely hit up FTE! Good luck!

There was a guy driving around here with one of those Centurions. Never seen one before but it was a 96 or 97 looked like an f350 with a solid body with a canopy. It was pretty slick rig had a 7.3. Personally I think ford stepped on their dick when they quit using that engine.

Ya those were pretty cool - and rare! The older IDI motors were pretty cool - but came with their own share of issues. IMO, the older 7.3 would still be around if it werent for emissions standards.

An X with all new front end parts will wander all over the road.
new wheel bearings, ball joints, tire rod ends, and just about every part in the front end was replaced. god damn did it drive like SHIT. i mean hard to keep it in TWO lanes.

put a new front axle in out of a Ford Test truck, and never looked back. still dunno what the problem was. we actually got the motor, trans, transfer case and front axle out of that test truck for 5 grand. swapped all the parts over to our truck and have been selling our used parts. so far, we have made money off the swap, and still have the motor to sell.
motor has new injectors, rebuilt turbo and ford water pump, and includes all accessories. easy to off for 5 Grand, just waiting for one of the local landscapers to blow their motor. the guys around here beat their equipment ragged.....

I agree, the new springs all around are perfect if you plan to trailer. those torsion bars and a sway bar link are also a must have for towing billboard sized trailers.

I've had two 7.3's in F-350's and they were great! First one I sold with 280K miles and all I did was but a tranny and injectors in at 175K. Second one I just sold last year with 100K and all I ever did on that one was replace a cam position sensor. I sure miss that truck but didn't need anything that big after the move to GA.

Cool thanks for the advice all. The one problem with getting an X is I would need to rent a trailer to haul the bike whenever I get to go riding. The one I am looking at has an 8 inch Fabtech lift with Fox shocks and a Banks kit on it.

Pic X2. And actually a utility trailer will come in quite handy. I have a 6x12 that I use all the time! And its quite nice to just roll the bike up a small ramp vs up higher on a truck - good when you're dog tired from riding all day. Is this one you're looking at a 7.3 or 6.0? Year?

It has 58,000 miles on it and the guy is asking $22,300 for it. Nope I haven't gone to look at it yet.

Looks good! Cost is about right. And those are some low miles! Barely getting broken in! Be sure you get a decent test drive in if/when you decide to look. Only prob with a lifted X is you'll be limited to where you can park. 7'ish is the lowest I can fit it - that was before my spring swap too. Still fits in my garage...barely.

Small exhaust on that dude. Looks like anyway. Still clean looking rig. I still say you can't beat the 7.3 all the way around. Biggest problems way back were electrolisis, so I would always use this stuff called Run Cool in the coolant. But I think most coolants are safe now. Haven't heard of it in a long time anyway.

Early 7.3's had cavitation issues...u added a Ford additive to the coolant at maintenance intervals (I forget how often) to combat it. I since swapped my green coolant to some Delo ELC - good for 750k and no more additive or risk of cavitation! Good point about the exhaust. Tip looks small for having Banks stuff on it...is it just the tuner?

http://phoenix.craigslist.org/wvl/ctd/1609604091.html

going to see if they wioll do 17,500$ OTD if so i might be driving the fucker home. :D

Only thing that i am apprehensive about is the 5th wheel in the bed, I dont want a truck that has towed its entire life.
