Why would you even want a 74 tooth rear sprocket?

thats stock 250 gearing, and the 250s and 500s use the same sprockets, just different tooth #, so he probably bought a 250 chain and sprocket kit.

15 / 45 is a drive ratio of "3".
Whats this mean to me?
The same rollers will constantly mesh with the same sprocket teeth.... over and over and over and over andover and over andover and over andover and over andover and over andover and over andover and over andover and over andover and over andover and over andover and over andover and over andover and over andover and over andover and over andover and over andover and over andover and over andover and over andover and over andover and over andover and over andover and over andover and over andover and over andover and over andover and over andover and over andover and over and
Not good for long term wear.
Go 15 / 44-46 instead.

???
You sure about that?
Wouldn't that be more of a function of how many links you have?
Having an odd number of teeth on each sprocket is better for wear as the links go by inside, outside, inside, outside.

Sorry, my bad. What I meant to say was "Wouldn't that
ALSO be a function of how many links you have?" because they are both factors.
BTW, are we actually talking about how many teeth on my sprockets will get me the most life?
....Ok. So long as we're not discussing what will get the most horsepower.

I wuz thinkin' like the two sprockets rubbin' together, like gearz.

Still a valid thought. If you're gonna run a ratio of 3, stay away from a link count thats divisible by 3.
What am I saying? Personally, I don't think this is even worth worrying about.

well, brit, by your standards... if soaking a rusted chain in wd40 will loosen it up, run it!

dannygraves wrote:15/45 is doable on the trails (you will need to clutch a lot) and doable on the street, I wouldn't go any taller for the dirt, or lower for the street, Its really hard to find that balance between street and dirt unless you can get a wide ratio trans, that really helps things out.
Hey Danny, I rode the 14/45 and it to seemed tall. I can't imagine a 15. I was clutching a bunch picking my way up and down steep sections. I'm thinking of splitting the difference and installing a 13 in the front. Other than the obvious drawbacks of chain angle etc, any input woud be cool.
BRAAAAAP!

i ran 15/45 in the dunes for a bit it was too tall for that but on the street and in the dirt it was awesome like danny said.. I now have 14/49 and love it in the dunes. not as much shifting.. just go back to the stock ratio and you will be tits on.

Shoots Brah!
My bar tab is getting higher isn't it !?
Dannygraves, The trails I ride are very rough and technical. Not like So. Cal. goat trails in the desert or anything else I've ever ridden on. That and the risk of SERIOUSLY screwing yourself up if you crash (lava is rediculously sharp) has slowed me down about 25%.
There were times that first was too high (of course their were time when 5 was too low...but less so) so I'll try the 13 and see what it gets me.
Been riding the DRZ as of late.....she's PERFECT for an old tank.
