....because you shortened the effective tuned length of the pipe by the length of the silencer and whatever part of the stinger it was attached to.

All work in tuning the power band is done in the expansion chamber, the diameter and length all have seperate effects. The muffler does just that, muffle sound, at a SLIGHT expense in power. That is why you dont find them on dedicated drag race machines.

Bigger diameter of the chamber broadens the "hit" but reduces the peak and low end torque. A smaller diameter reduces the scavenging effect but has a better port blocking which is good for torque and fuel economy (increases dynamic comp ratio). This is why the stock pipe on a cr500 works so well. :wink:
