Those are compression reliefs/releases, to help the engine kick over easier.

$14 buys you a REAL service manual...with every spec, torque value, and description you could ever want, including for those pesky decompression scallops...

the scallops started later, I think it was '89-'90 when they started adding those. the '80s bikes took a real man to start! :D they didn't have scallops and the pre '87 ones even had higher compression too. A lot of guys choose to bore to 1mm over to get rid of the scallops on the newer ones since they are power robbing
Honestly, from riding a modded '86 motor running really high compression with a 250 kicker on it, I would love one of those newer motors with the scallops, it really sucks when I have to start my bike on the side of a hill.
:D

hey, ALL you guys can TRY to start mine next time I'm out. The only person other than myself who can start it is James Lewis (tough kid!)
MFDB can't start it and neither can anyone else who has tried   Its all about technique!

Does your technique resemble starting in a semi sitting position, getting the kicker to the very top of its' range, then sorta going into a jumping upright position and getting a very full kick? This was the technique I used on the 85' and it seems to work on the "new" bike too. I'm built kinda square though...5'10" and 215-220.

I've never seen myself doing it, but it can't look very graceful.

yup, I even get my left leg off the ground because I put everything into that kick. the trick is to use your leg muscles the most while throwing your weight down to back it up. there would be no way to start my bike standing on one leg while standing the whole time.

mojo has a video of me doing it :D I stalled a lot on the AZ ride. Only my bike has higher compression and a shorter kicker now.

Sounds exactly like the way i start mine... get that bitch all the way up and jump and let my 285lbs muscle that bastard thru 2 strokes and pray it lights.. :P

Sabres wasnt bad however it kicked my ass the first couple kicks.. then i got it fired for bob :P Those short straight kickers SUCK!!!

I don't know what the hell you guys are talking about I have no probs starting my bike. Hell I started it right up even after my "seth enslow" sitting on the side of the hill.

if your going to the last bore you should get your barrel nickaciled, and get the crank rebalanced

cr 89

yep thats the plan new rod and big end bearings and re balanced crank, and check all other bearings while apart ,replace main bearings ,its been bored out but not sure how mutch.someone has scribed 79x89 on case ?,shes looking pretty sweet engines on bench, frame powdercoated in honda red, swingarm on all bearings replaced arm polished, just waiting for rear shock to go to be rebuilt.yokes back on cleaned and top yoke painted black as thorpes 89 winning bike should look the dogs b---ocks when done, will try and post some pics not sure how.
