Not holding an idle can mean lower end leaks, you are right to keep looking.Nomadic Cycle Racks wrote:The 98 CR is @ 2000ft. Wouldn't it run a little richer anyway? It does have a dentless FMF fatty and silencer on it. Maybe it was never jetted for them. Oh yea, this bike would need a clutch for sure too...a bit grabby clicking it into first. Wouldn't idle for shit coming to a stop.
Go that way real fast, and if something gets in your way...............
Turn.
Turn.

Looks nice...
Dont just offer the money. Pull it out and let them see it, smell it.
A big Stack of $100's, especially before Christmas, is hard to turn down.
This sounds kinda sneeky, but if he turns down your offer... Have a bunch of your friends call him, ask a bunch of dopey questions... set appointments, then never show.
Have them do this for a week.. to "condition" the guy..
Then you call and say that you found another $100 to toss into the deal.
He'll snap it right up!

I would look for a 91+ nasty looking tore up POS that runs ok, like bob said your gonna have to slap a piston in anyway.
You dont get much out of a roller moneywise unless its REALLY clean.

Always get small demoninations of cash, if the guy wants $1500 bring $1000 in $10 bills a big wad looks awsome
I bought a supra a few years back, the guy wanted $3500 I showed up with $2000 in $5s in one pocket and $1000 in C notes in the other. When we got down to haggling I tossed the big stack of fives on the hood and said "thats what Ill give you" he asked how much is it and I told him to count it, by the time he was done and was holding the wad he agreed.
The C notes never saw the light of day

A bit of background.... I pulled my steelie apart to do the top end and found my jug and crank were ruined, I split the cases to rebuild the crank and found the tranny grenaded. It was gonna cost me at least $900 to fix every thing the right way, I found this donar bottom end and parted the rest out..
Heres the orig AD piccy
I got her for $340 and aparently "it hasnt run in 2 years", It fired 2nd kick with 2 yr old gas
Heres a thread on the blowup....

when I did my complete rebuild, I didn't have to touch the trans, I only replaced all the case bearings since I had it apart. My tranny still shifts like butter, these tranmissions are really touch. An older bike with an experienced owner is less likely to have a hammered trans, then a newer shiney bike being ridden by a punk-ass. MFDB just had to replace a shift fork, shaft and 5th gears because he let his idiot friends ride it (in his well taken care of '99). My bike is an '86 and last time I had it apart showed slight wear on 2nd gear. So the age actually has VERY little to do with it. find yourself a '92 that has been sitting in a garage for 10 years since the owner had kids or something. slap a new topend on and ride.
Now that being said, I wouldn't pay $2000 for anything that didn't run perfect or close to it. if that guy doesn't know how to jet his bike he probably also doesn't know a lot of other things.
I'm a big fan of the $500 bike thats in peices because a lot of the time its a gold mine of shiney new parts the last guy forgot about, it gives you a chance to go through EVERYTHING and you can get it for dirt cheap.

hell, if you don't mind going for a drive, here are a couple I found in my local craigs list
http://lasvegas.craigslist.org/mcy/506848256.html
http://lasvegas.craigslist.org/mcy/502479969.html
I bet either of them would take a grand cash or less. I picked up my gen-1 as a complete running 250 for $900 on craigs list. Remember its x-mas time people are desperate for some extra cash.

Not too shabby. Ya, I saw the build on your bike danny. I think you can say you have the most economical A/F conversion by a long shot. Im not too worried about shaving off a 100 here or there. Plus the guys sounded older, so I'll rack his brain about the bikes history and such. Should I go lower or is that just a slap in the face...

Sorry, had to work all day assembling the new CNC plasma cutter
The bike was absolutely cherry like he said. He is the second owner by 4 months. The first owner scared the shit out of himself and he has had the bike since. Rotors, kickstarter, shifter all have minimal play. He hasn't rode it in 5 years!! He just starts it annually and runs some gas through it! Started up for ME 4th kick. Rediculous!
I almost don't want to hack apart the bike for my AF conversion because it is such a well kept bike. Something to be said for a nearly original bike.
So I whipped out 1500$ during a silent moment after talking a bit and looking it over, counted it quietly to myself, and handed it to him. He says "how much is there?" I said "count it". So He continued to count it and says, "I can't do it."
Of course not, I mean this was his baby he had since it was nearly new. SO I whipped out another hundred. "this is all I brought" I said.
He passed, but courteously asked for my name and number.
I've already started on the "conditioning" Bob. I mean, who wants a '94 500 two stroke anyway?? I don't think it'll sell for what he's asking. Let's see if it works.
