All the cometic top end gasket kits I can find make no mention of having a steel-edged base gasket. All I can find are solid paper gaskets.
Could someone direct me to the gasket in question?
Thanks!

I sent Cometic an Email, and here's their reply.
I am sorry but we do not offer a mls base gasket for the cr500.We have a MLS head gasket but the base in the kit will be made out of AFM material. I am more than happy to assist you with any further questions.
So, is it something that has to be custom ordered? I am a bit confused at this point.

they're correct on the "MLS" part of it but the jackasses should have given you the part number for the 1989-2001 cr500 top end kit, the set has the metal base gasket and the same as oem head gasket which will work with oversize bores. the reed gasket is also coated metal.
The part number is C7020 in Cometic or Wiseco

they should have been more specific in answering that MLS is not what its called, rather "AFM"
from the website...
Cometic AFM material engine cover gaskets are made from a chemically blown compounded nitrile synthetic rubber that is bonded to an aluminum core. AFM material has a temperature resistance of over 250° F (121° C) and an 85% recovery while maintaining a strong torque retention. Gaskets made from AFM install dry and do not require a re-torque. Typical gaskets made from AFM include: cam chain gaskets, timing cover gaskets and water pump gaskets.
They make the clutch case gasket for the KX500 and other bikes from this material also. I've been trying to convince them we should have a center gasket for the CR500 built in AFM also

That was the kit I was looking at, But I wasnt sure if they had different series of top end sets because they dont mention what the included gaskets are made of.
Thanks Roosty!
my exact question to them was
I am looking for an EST Base gasket for a 89-01 CR500. I need a whole top-end kit, but the base gasket needs to be the steel EST gasket, and I cannot seem to find what I need on your order page.
So, I assumed that covered ALL the EST gasket styles they made, not just the MLS.....morons!

Some of the info says steel core, some says aluminum.
They need a new techicial writer....
