I've beed asked how I did the cooling system... Here it is...

Image

Due to zero tanks clearance, I removed the screw in fittings, and installed some copper elbows with "Muggy Rod"..... Basically Hi-Tech solder. I preheated the head to about 400 degrees, followed the Muggy Rod instructions, added a little heat with some map gas when needed...and it all flowed together quite nicely...

Image

Installed with all stock Steelie hoses... No splices, no barbed fittings and hose clamps.... OEM baby!

Image

Another view... Clears the tank, no leaks, cheap, do-able at home..... it seems like a good solution....

Looks pretty good not sure if copper looks OEM though.

I do wonder about corrosion though two different metals you know.
And what about vibration and cracking of the copper might be an issue, might not though too.

Last question whens this beat going to actually roost some dirt?

I've read in older data sheets that it protects against 12 different metals. And won't harm your pets too.

First Ride Report:

Well, trashing on the bike until 1:30 am Sat, to ride Sunday + driving 450 miles round trip for a day ride was a bit rough...... But was it worth it?

Hell YES!!!!

Comments:

1. I was shocked ( ) by the near lack of vibration. Sticking close to Hondas metalurgy and assembly procedures was the key I think. The double headstay is another piece to the puzzle. I was very careful to neither spread or collapse the frame of cradle during fabrication. The motor fits well, and in a condition I call neutral. Its just sits there....

Image

I know my motor extremely well, and can say with 100% conviction, that my A/F has less vibes than my steelie. After Brit rode it, it was the first words out of his mouth..... " God Damm, this bike is smooth... feels electric!"

2. Airbox Issues.... The stock 250X airbox has a snorkle on the top, its the only air intake the box has. On my first hillclimb, the bike totally petered out about 40% up the hill...... WTF???? Tried it 4x, same results.... Went back to camp and thought about it for a a minute or two. GOT IT!!!

Brit would have used a frickin' hatchet if one was available. Thank god we only had a prybar and Dykes. I stretched the thick plastic with the bar, while Brit snipped. The damage was kept to a minimum, and the intake area was increased 200% for a virtual 300% power increase.

To do it correctly, cut it like this...
Image

3. How did she ride? I expected allot, but was unprepared for the results. The bike is Sheer Joy to ride. Light, nimble, suspension ( Resprung Only) is spot on, and I could have rode that thing all day. Rather than bore you with :blahblah: :blahblah: :blahblah: :blahblah: ....

Just go build one and try to wipe that shit eating grin off your face.... I dare you!

4. Odd ball stuff like my fuel tank, remote coil location, cooling system, double head stay all worked flawlessly on the maiden voyage.... The ol' odometer recorded 39.9 miles..... no " Iron Butt" ride, but no spin around the staging area either.

5. Photos? Nope... Like Brit said.... We were have WAY TOO MUCH FUN! Everyone was home watching Football, Brit and I had Dumont basically all to ourselves...

Whats next? Add a lighting coil, mod the airbox, reroute some wiring, mount my handguards...and I'm done.

As always, I'm here to answer your Gen 4 250X conversion questions.... Big thanks for all the support I got during the build, and the kind words on the completed project.

I know you guys would have called it a pile of shit if it was one, so your praise means even that much more...

Time to ride.......

Yawwwnnnnnn!!! No real surprise here....the bike was built right brother. Of course, the long term test is the one everybody should be most interested in, but my guess is she will be ship-shape in a year the same she is today. You done goooood!

Man that is really cool to build the bike from pieces and to go out and only have "minor" issues. I hope to be so fortunate.

I keep hearing all about how the CRF250's arent " Full Size" bikes? Bullshit. Brit and I measured it against his Steelie...... Same size.

"Money Shot" of how all the nonsense fits together.

I hate to say it and give bob praise but that bike really was bitchen, no noticable vibes at all.

I hit comp a few times on my gen1 then hit it with bobs and they are two completly different animals, mine feels like a giant 250v dildo in comparison the vibes just arent there on his, my steelie vibrates more and thats a fact.

You did a damn nice job and unlike most maiden voyages dint leave us stuck at camp all day

thats what i thought when i first rode my 250r, just WAY underpowered.

glad to hear everything went well, makes me looking foward to getting mine done that much more.

question, where did you get the fittings that you welded onto the radiators to fit the 500 hoses?
