i was talking to Baja Designs at the dealer show last weekend about a lighting kit for my 500AF, he said that id need a lighting coil other than the "add on" that places like moose sell. he recomended an Eline or the service honda ignition. i told him the eline discontinued their external coil, and that i won't put a SH ignition on my bike because of all the starting problems. he said that he didn't know that they were having issues with them.

All right, I might get chastised but I will ask anyways.
Why does the SH ignition seem to work so well on the aircooled 500 over there?
Or is that just a rare functioning unit?

Some do work, RedRider MV's for example. I've ridden it, works great.

Some dont, as proven here many times more.

THATS the problem. When you fork over the $600, theres no telling that its going to function properly.

The other board wants to dismiss it as " Owner Error"... end of story.

NO QUESTIONING ALLOWED!!

Jay Lewis has more 500's than anyone I know.

When he says theirs an issue, you better beleive it!!

To my knowlage, none of the units sent out as replacements have helped the situation.

There is a long way to go in resolving the problem.

:?

Chastised? Here? For asking a question?

NO WAY!!!

We WANT you to ask questions... Thats the only way to get to the truth!

I race the Unclassified and 40+ classes at the Adelanto GP today. Mr. Lewis' loaner stock ignition meant the bike started in less than five kicks at 38F at 07:00 AM and then in 1-2 kicks all day. Just to double-check the starting performance I deliberately stalled it in a couple of deep sandy corners and it even fired up in gear...

when you are talking to a company that doesn't deal with them and don't deal with 2 strokes, plus he kept saying "american service honda" making it sound like american honda, i don't think hes around the 500s too much.

I am pretty sure that hard start was a flooding issue on the NOS bike that day, as soon as he pulled the plug and replaced with a fresh one that monster fired up on the next kick if I can remember right.

Thats why the first thing you do when you are riding one of Jays bikes is shut the fuel off when ever you stop!!

I spoke with AJ today and he and Electrosport have been testing and found something in the ignition design/set-up that if the kick was started at a certain position would mean that that the initial spark would be delayed. The rabbit kick method would overcome this potential problem. He is going to take back my Electrosport ignition and exchange it for new stock parts temporarily in the expectation a future version of the Electrosport ignition will be easier (for me) to start and provide more lighting power. I am very impressed with AJ standing behind his bike and providing this level of service.

I have one of the ignitions still in the box that I haven't installed yet. Given the news a better one is coming out I'm going to return mine and pick one up once the initial issues are sorted.

You should try what you have. You may find - like others - it works just fine for you and you would be missing out in the meanwhile. The better bit refers just to the way I like start my bike that doesn't fit with the current config.

Every single one of those ignitions Ive come in contact with on a CR500 doesnt start for shit (Ive seen or heard about 3, yours, bobs borrowed one and J lewis's at pismo).

I dont think its down to a kicking method

The main reason I want to wait is that I suck at the rabbit kick thing, even on a 250. I'm 270lbs, I do one big kick really well, and am horrible at little kicks. I usually research everything before I buy it, going on the strength of Service Honda's rep I didn't read up on this until after bought it, but once I heard more I decided to wait to install it. Now there is at least hope, between this and the e-line I feel like my choices are a product that has been discontinued, or another that isn't quite ready for prime time. I want some wattage some way or another!

I cant help but feel that while sometimes painful, the honesty of this site is what brought the issue to the front burner, and now its getting resolved.

Good job AJ

The product is junk, not AJ's fault per say but, I have e-mailed electro sport 3 times with zero responce, thats all any one needs to know. When you deal with clowns you get a side show. Actions speek louder then words , AJ = thumbs up

Electro clowns= zero
