mike doesn't butt weld anything there are dowels in there

Butt welds?

There is a press fit 3 inch long plug in the frame and the new cradle pieces and then they are welded along with rosettes as well. No one would butt weld a frame I think but, then again no one else heat treats their frames as far as I know.

Butt welds... what do you make your plugs out of? bar stock 6061?

Yeah i can see you have plugs in there, im not doubting your joint preparation or welding, your work speaks for it self and its obvious you know your shit, im just curious why you join the tubes in that location instead of back into the main casting?

Hey mike, i remember reading in one of your old posts that you use a helium/argon mix for your shielding gas? whats the advantage of using this over straight argon when welding aluminium?

Just thought Id throw my bit in here as well without starting a war between the Aussies and the Yanks !.Davo77 and I are both metal fabricators,and in our trade when you "butt' 2 pipes/tubes it is commonly known as a "butt" weld.I know Mike has filled it with solid,and as tradesman Davo and I both know he does bloody nice work,but the join is still known as a butt weld.So those of you who jumped on the bandwagon about that post jumped the gun a bit !

Davo's question was simply why doesnt Mike remove the existing cradle and replace it with one piece like I have here in the pic posted which I think everyone will agree looks much more 'factory'.Again,no disrespect to Mike's way of doing it,as he said it IS a lot more work.But I am in no hurry and Mike has a business to run.

does your clutch cover bolt not rest on that weld? that is nice work anyways...mike is doing amazing work and i don't really care what the welds are called, any thing can be smoothed out to look stock...and there is deffinately no loss of strength in those spacer welds...either way you slice it there are some talented people doing these conversions, and you're both doing real nice work. thanks for the pics...

The clutch cover sits about 1mm away from the weld,hence the reason I trimmed a bit of the existing material away from the top other wise I would have had to notch it anyway.Thanks for your comment about my work.

Yeah I coudnt give a shit about whether its a butt weld,fillet weld, butt in the 6G position or a smelly butt !!! But I dont like seeing people attack others when clearly they dont understand weld terminology anyway.... The CR500RIDERS site is for that bitchy crap I thought !!!

Around here we call it a butt weld if there is no plug or other inner locking mechanism.

Yes a rosette is a plug. I think some of the questions led some people to believe that some people assumed it was a standard "butt" weld "with out a lug inside" that's all no one was attacking anyone...

For the record my lugs aren't solid by the way and are machined and not extruded the shielding gas is 75% helium and 25% argon and the rod is 4000 series so we can heat treat it and the machine is set at about 225 amps I hope this answers questions for people as well. I build bikes becaue I love to not because it's my business and the day it becomes something I have to do to feed my family will be the last day I build a bike for anyone...

One more thing your work is beautiful from whatever side of the fence I'm on...

Like Davo said in his post,I am making a career out of it so I wasnt planning on posting a thread till Im a bit nearer to completion.Just dont want to drag it out to long on here thats all.But.....at least you have seen some pics of my work unlike some others on this site that claim to have several A/F's
