Dude, theres places is AZ single track so friggin gnarly, slipping the clutch in first with a tiny ass front sprocket aint slow enough!! A 500 has NO BUISINESS in that kind of terrain. Buy a 250 at LEAST or a thumper enduro...
If I ever get back there, I prolly wont even bring the 500 as a BACK UP much less ride it!! HAHA My 145 lb ass just cant make a modified 500 go that slow!! It will be my fo fitty with a 12 toother!!

You were the baddest MOFO out there that day...few mortals I know would even THINK anout attempting what you did!! Old ass clapped out 86 with the totally and COMPLETELY wrong setup and gearing!!dannygraves wrote:ya, I was there on my '86 with 14/47 gearing... clutching was the ONLY option

I also ate it more than anyone, except maybe Brit. I landed on so many cacti, I had needles I didn't find for days after. The lack of brush guards was my biggest problem though
I felt bad for Mojo since he got stuck behind my slow ass

for a big guy like Bob or Jay, a CR500 is basically the equivalent to a 250 or a 300 anyway, so this argument is a mute point. That said, unless your name is Steve Hatch or Destry Abbott, you will be faster for longer on a 250...period. I have ridden the nastiest stuff out here for 4 years, and have on several occasions had the pleasure of riding with A & AA guys from places like Washington, Utah and Texas, Michigan and Florida who's opinions I value and trust. To a man, they all have commented that AZ singletrack is as nasty as it gets save for the greasy, wet stuff you find in Washington or Hawaii. In the tight stuff, the lightness, flickability and zippy power of a 250 or a 300 is the better choice for tight, technical, traction-challenged singletrack. One huge factor is that you can flog a 250's clutch all day and it fades very little. A 500's clutch getting too hot is a deal breaker and will force lots of breaks to let things cool down and recover...including the rider.
Now the dunes...that is another deal all together....

bike size
The 250 I'm using for my conversion is only the second 250 Ihave owned. I'm 6'6" 300 to 350 lbs depending on how much I have drank or eaten LOL, anyway I was riding it around the house and almost got fubar'ed because the bike simply lacks the power to get it self out of trouble. I have been riding the 500's for over 20 years now and have seen single track so tight 125's and 250's would stall out trying to get through. The 500 is the most versatile and ridable bike they have built. So it goes without saying I too will agree with MOJO.
riders
I will also add though, Shanman is right though, an uncle of mine lives on Deervalley Rd in Phoenix AZ, and I have ridden in that area a little. The single track is alot different down there, being from the North West, you deal with trees, down there I found alot of moons rocks! It's all good though at least we are all still outthere riding!

Re: bike size
Dude, you are TWICE my weight LITERALLY. You on a 500 is like me on a 250. For guys my size a 500 is too much power for single track. Plain and simple, I never got out of 1st maybe a few times in 2nd on the tight stuff. And I was on the clutch so much I could not buckle my seat belt when I got back in the truck!! Slipping the clutch means wasting power so why bring that much power?? When talking bike displacement needs, you have to facter in the size of the rider. Big MOFOs like you, Jay Lewis, Bob, etc. need a 500 oftentimes. But little guys like me rarely need one outside of the sand dunes. Do you know how many guys on 500's I have WORKED on my STOCK YZ450??JBaze wrote:The 250 I'm using for my conversion is only the second 250 Ihave owned. re
Thats very true man! I'm just a big S.O.B and can whip the 500 around like alot of others can do with their 250's or 450's. The guy I bought my first CR 500 from in 1987 was pushing it to the street to start it, and I had to hold it up for him to start it! It's all good just making conversation while waiting for delivery of parts finish my bike so I can go tear it up a little.
Re: re
Been there done that!! After I rebuilt my engne and milled the head, among other things, I had to have my 280lb buddy start it because I didnt weigh enough to get it past TDC...JBaze wrote: I had to hold it up for him to start it!

Some nasty thread drift here, but WTH!
Let me clarify. I respectfully disagree that a 500 has NO BUSINESS in that terrain. It's all about rider.
I also completely agree with Shanman that you will be faster for longer on a bike that is sized to suit you. I'm 5'10" and 215. One of many reasons I bought my YZ250 earlier this year. (Now if only things would settle down so I could go ride again) The problem here is that maintenance costs go way up. Not a good thing for someone who is not "in it to win it". I KNOW I am faster riding a 125. It's what I cut my teeth on. Problem is, I would melt one in one serious ride. I got my first big bore because of the fact that riding a 125 got way too expensive. This was in 85 when I was 16 and all of 140 lbs. I took to it straightaway and never looked back (til this year).
One thing to note though, I personally have NEVER experienced an overheated clutch in my 20+ years of riding a big bore in this wonderful PNW singletrack. And trust me, I don't stick to the easy shit.
Despite what newer riders seem to think, a little momentum is your best friend in the nasties.
K, I'm going to shut up now.

I think more than the bike is the setup... the right gearing, pipe, ergos, etc. I'm building my gen-4 as a trail bike, all stock motor, low gearing, fmf gnarly pipe, etc. My gen-1 has NO BUSINESS on a trail, I still have scars to prove it My '86 was definitly not setup right for that AZ ride and I had no idea what I was getting into. I've come a long way since then.
But riding Justins 450 on the trails made me not want to trade back, it was just so easy, it was like cheating.

oh, don't forget to bring your 500 tomorrow as backup... both jason and I are having bike issues today, we'll see if we both have running bikes tomorrow.
My bike is running tits, but oil is coming out the exhaust everywhere. I just got that silencer off a fellow hoon, so I opened it up and the packing was stuffed with oil and on fire
Repacked and siliconed every connection. Won't be able to see if that was just oil from the silencer or something else until tomorrow. All the oil was coming out where the 3 bolts hold the inner peice to the outer peice. I'm not losing any tranny oil from what I can see either.
OOHH, I found some MUD by the house and had some fun there goes the shiney new plastincs
