Did you use the cr250 coil too? I"m wondering because I still have a complete '00 cr250 setup that I might try out real quick on my 500:D

So what is the downside to doing this? If any?

not cr500 related but theres some guys on another site that had programable ignition. aparently they made a curve specificaly for their motor and dynoed it with 4hp increase. ignition is important part of the eqausion of how the bike runs. sucks most of the cool updated aftermarket shit is for the more popular bikes

The 250 ignitions were changed three times between mine and Danny's '87. 88-89, 90-93 and then 94-96. In '97 they went digital.

Oh I forgot to mention that, no I'm not using the 250 coil. It's too short. I'd have to make a new mounting bracket for it. I was a bit worried if the two were compatable...well apparently they are.

Starting is noticably more difficult. If you can't start your bike first kick now I don't know what to tell you? Your bike would throw a fit with this ignition. I leave my ass on the seat when I start my bike, just push the lever down and it fires. I had to stand and put some ass behind my kicks to get the bike started this time. Once I figured it out, bike continued to be a one kick wonder. It just takes more ass to fire is all...
And bottom end. It does not produce any more power below 1/4 throttle. Well, my graph explains all that...

anyone try running an 02-03 system without plugging in the stepper motor for the exh valve?

I will be.
the plate will need some grinding, the bolt holes are the same, but the cases where the main seal goes are different.
I don't see why it would NEED the powervalve motor to work, mayb e some resistors could take its place if the ECU really looks for it.
also, this '03 flywheel is TINY!

before '97 from what mik says is plug and play
'97-'99 has a shitload of wires and uses some kind of rectifier unit.....what are the wires for and what is the rectifier ?
'00 looks to be a diffrenet system unique to that yaer, but looks straight forward with not many wires
'01 looks to also be unique to that year
'02+ has a SHITLOAD of wires, what do all those wires control ??? if their not plugged to the carb then where do they go, and will the motor still run with those wires not connected ??

The 02 on up electronics make 12v to power the electric servo which opens and closes the powervalve. There is a voltage regulator/switcher that probably reverses polarity (best guess) to open and close the powervalve. I dont see where if they were not hooked up would keep it from not working. There are a butt load of wires going into the servo controller coming out of the CDI but still only 4 wires coming from the stator plate.Would be happy to shoot some shots of the system from the 02-03 or the 04-07 system.......

Well I got several hours of seat time on it now. The 250 ignition is definately softer under 1/4 throttle. It does though build power quicker and has waaay more top end. But really friendly on the bottom...almost too friendly for my tastes. Motor likes to run a bit higher rpm. Which is just fine with that smaller flywheel, you wouldn't know you were riding a 500 if you didn't look at the stickers. Weather has finally cooled down here and I haven't changed my jetting yet. Bike carburetor poorly all day. Wouldn't idle and surged some. Killed it four times. Shut some wanna be fast guys down a couple times. Bike just gobbles up the ground and leaves the thumpers scratching their heads...
Spent a good bit of time playing around. Had a blast whipping my bike over the parking lot double which had me giggling in my helmet like a bitch...I've never been able to throw a 500 around like this

Track has this step up that you need alot of speed to clear because it doesn't have much of a kicker. Well while goofing off I found I could actually scrub it pretty well which was very exciting for me...I got to thinking about why I had never done these fun things on my bike until now?? Because I couldn't with a heavy ass feeling motor! My bike feels like it handles as sharp as a knife. I love it!
Bunch of four wheelers at this place, which sucks. One of them blew up his fuel injected Suzuki 450. I spoke with him a bit about his ride. Said he just spent $700 rebuilding it two months before. I asked if I could take a video of him explaining all of this so I could post it on a forum. I expected him to say hell no but he was actually not so against it. But he said a lot of guys he races with give him shit for not riding a Yamaha and he he didn't want them finding out. So this makes three weekends in a row I've seen blown up 450s. I am in the progress of making a kind of documentary about this...every weekend I'm going to video a blown up four stroke and speak to the rider to see what he says. I told this guy I hadn't touched my motor in five years! He was pretty disgusted...

ok, so has anyone considered the 250 ignition setup from MSD?

I thought about it, just $$$
plus doesn't it need a sepparate battery?

buy the 2001 CR 250 complete ignition. I believe 1999 the 250 had a electronic power jet carb that wires hooked to. 2000 they went away from it. 2001 has a better curve than 2000. After 2001 it sounds like honda maybe went back to the powerjet carb. These iginitions are digital so better spark. It also retards the timing for easy initial starting but then really advances the timing at low rpms, that's probably why you had surging down low you need more fuel. It starts to retard the timing in the 4-5000 rpm range for the better overrev. I have these ignitions on my TRX quads and are really worth the money. on the dyno they see 3-5 hp increase all over the rpm range by putting this on. I will be putting this setup on my 500 as well.

the powerjet was '97, '98, '04+
'02-''03 didn't have the powerjet, but the stator plate needs to be modified.
