Im not saying 2 strokes dont throw rods and frag into a pile of useless junk. But it is far less common.

IF 4 strokes were more reliable, sure i would have one for the MX track just for the updated, cutting edge chassis/suspension, the ease to ride, and the ability to ride longer. thats the only thing i hate about my bike is that it whips my ass.

but for trails, that pinger 250 is kick ass. plus, a piped 4 stroke sounds like a fart machine, not to mention it is way loud.

I have infact whitnessed and experienced more 2 stroke break downs than 4 stroke break downs and I feel the negative 4 stroke reputation is driven by the fear of change and stubbornness of a bunch of old timers who don't feel like dealing with a chain tensioner. .

yep, i have too. and every 4 stroke failure ive seen so far has been catastrophic. the worst 2 stroke failure ive seen so far has been a cylinder-replating (mine). most of the time, its just piston/rings.



and the "unreliable" 4 stroke thing is just inna-net folklore....just ask all the racers that have grenaded a motor and it cost them the race......

lets see you fix this with a piston/rings, not to mention, i have never seen a 2 stroke do this before.....

this is funny, because in this most I was just messing and stiring the pot... as far as the pic, have you ever seen a 2 stoke motor lose a piston pin into a port window... some guys on here have and it doesn't leek all that different from the pic you posted.
I love the cr500 and 2 strokes in general. I prefer riding my shiney new 450, after a couple of years, I'll pull it apart, clean it, drop in a new piston, new timing chain tensioner and guides and valve springs and seals, then hammer on it for a couple more years. a 2 stroke would get the same treatment, only a piston and a bore minus the valve springs, seals, tensioner and guides... I'm not going to land in the poor house spending an extra couple hundred every couple years.

I can tell you that the 250SX handles "ok" but sure as hell not nearly as much "better" than the 450 as they make it out to be.

I haven't ridden one yet myself. But I do enjoy seeing proof that other riders feel the same way I do in regards to 450 handling. Aside from the original 500cc machines, I think 450s are the worst handling bikes made

Whereas some guys prefer the long, slow, grandfather like handling of 450s as MXA put it , I enjoy the tight, nervous, instant responsiveness of a two stroke.

Just a Gen3. Built with an emphasis towards cornering. It's light as shit for a big bore, 226lbs wet w/no fuel. Smaller flywheel, no tubes, Ti fasteners on the hubs and clutch etc. It's a cornering son of a bitch although admittedly not as well handling as I'd like. But more responsive than a 450, you bet your ass. Now don't get me wrong, I don't think a 500cc two stroke is the class leader in quick and responsive, regardless of what it's put in. But certainly more so than a 450 when the purpose of said bike is to beat 450s on their home turf...Motocross.

Personally I think a Gen4 would be a wet dream for MX.

I've ridden every gen and owned and built 3 different gens. The gen-4 hands down was the best MX bike, corners super quick, but very unstable doing the high speed soft stuff like we ride. My gen-3 turned slower than the gen-4 but way quicker than the gen-1. it was also more stable with speed. My kawi out of the box out cornered them all and was more stable at speed. although, I did make as many adjustments as I could to get more moderate turning and better stability. the forks now are set at 3mm in the triples and its much better suited to me, but stock they were over 20mm and it turned like it was on rails. I've ridden A/Fs with their stock 250cc 2 stroke motors and will say that the 500 motor hurts turning, mostly due to gyros and weight, but also because of power delivery. with the 250cc 2 stroke, you could crank the throttle all the way coming out of a corner with it leaning and pick up the from end a little and simply haul ass. with the 500 your lucky to stay on the trail/track when you gas it out of a corner. I find it hard to believe that your gen-3 outcorners the current 450, and I'm not saying this as a 450 lover, but as someone who has owned and/or ridden all of the types of bikes mentioned there is simply less rotating mass and more tractable power. rotating mass weighs 100x more than stagnant weight on a bike, the 500 crank is its weakness for cornering even though the 450 motor as a whole weighs more.

Well there goes any respect I could give you in regards to this topic. The cr500 is WAAAAYYYYY more rotating mass than a crf450r motor. The harder hit and power band have negative effects on cornering and traction, so saying what you said before makes your statements about as contradictory as the definition of the word allows...

Did I say anything to the contrary? I do see a distinct separation between 500s and 500AFs if that's what confuses you.

Danny, agreed to your above statement. 500 gyros suck, and they'll never turn as good as 250s. However, I feel 450s have a very high center of gravity. It's not that they weigh more, I can't tell a diff of a couple pounds, but it feels to me so high in the chassis it does negatively effect changing direction. It feels like the 10 or so extra pounds are right between my knees? By comparison even my 500 falls into corners that I feel 450s don't, gyro aside. I don't however share your thoughts on a 500 being hard to control out of corners. They certainly can be if you ride them like you describe riding a 250. Easy answer is just to not cob on the throttle mid turn. As for my bike out cornering a standard 450, certainly don't take my word for it. Other members of this very site have ridden my bike and share this opinion. It's not any one thing I've done to this bike, but a cumulative effect of each. Like I mentioned, it's not the best handling...but I and others feel it's legitimately better than a 450. It handles and hooks up even better now with no tubes than when Steve rode it last.

I dont understand the whole loop thing with the 10 YZF. it would cut considerable weight to run the pipe straight to the silencer.

Its all about tuned length. A straight shot is to short to build good torque numbers...

Im betting its titanium, but even if its just stainless that loop itself prolly doesnt weigh much at all, like half a pound.
