Thanks to some parts from a fellow member, the 86' should be breathing a bit easier these days.
It took a bit of persuasion to clear the water pump bolt but all is well. It fit a ton better than the tweaked stock pipe I had on it.

Funny - I have it as well. Tracked it down on DVD about a year ago...now my kid has it in his room...probably watched it more than I have.
The CR500 is an acquired taste. If you don't like it, acquire some taste...

Well,
I took the 86' out to E street in yuba city on thursday. I had it and my 03' yz 250 in the back of the truck all ready to go. That was the plan at least, this was one of those days that just wouldnt pan out. Ran late at work, had old gas in the yz, full can of old gas that does me no good. Track closes at 2, get to my brothers at 1230. 3.5 hours of issues and to ride for an hour by time we get there. I wasnt to chipper, then extra issues with the yz didnt help much. The 500 was a bit too much bike that day, hadnt been on the track for a while. After a few slow laps it was like old faithful through the overflow hose. S O B ! was the main thought I had at the time. I had checked everything before I fired it up, coolant, tires the usual. The last time my brother and I rode it had acted up a bit but not like this. My brother had two bikes with him so the day wasnt a loss. We get to his house and pop the top end off just to check things out. Head gasket perhaps ? No, I had ran flush through 3 times and thought all was well... NEGATIVE, right rad was minimal flow, left was no flow. Ok, on to something here. The cylinder had what looked like fish tank gravel in the jackets. Not a few little chunks, a shit load ! My bro cleaned it in the solvent tank at our friends honda shop, honed it and got it ready to go. I picked up a set of gaskets, we bolted it all back up and now it sits in the basement. Evey time the bike acts up I always say " Dont think I wont put your ass for sale on the forum"
Thanks for your time.

I ordered a set of conversion bearings for the '86 the other day. I tracked down a set of '92-'94 clamps and forks. The main reason for this swap was so that I could get the correct spring rate for me. As well as a better front brake set up. All was well until I opened the box for the lower bearing. There were two large thick washers included in the bearing kit. After measuring I came to the conclusion that these were not needed for my swap. Pressing out the '92 stem was a bit of a chore. The problem now is that I did need a spacer, roughly 0.0060 worth. So now the dilemma is: tear down the front end and hope that the bottom triple doesn't break pressing out the stem again. Or, face the bottom of the head tube on the frame. I have done that on bicycles before, I realize that there is much more stress on this frame than a bicycle frame. There is a pretty good amount of un machined tube below where the steering race presses in. Thoughts? Comments? Other than some minor issues with bolt head size this hasn't been too bad.
