Subframe Question

Post by Alfaman »

Guys, i have an 89 CR5 all stripped ready for frame powder coating, is it possible to fit a later sub-frame from a 97 bike, so i can use a later rear fender, and if so does it mean i would have change seat/sidepanels.?????...Thanks Si :D

Everything on the new sub frame would have to be changed. Seat, side panels, airbox is all different.

I believe that you'd have to also change the silencer also.

Its worth it if you want to have a late modle bike youll also need a late air box boot

Personally, I like the 91's and on. I prefer the integrated seat/side panels/ rear fender look over the old style.

Thanks Guys, i just think the older fenders look too big and droopy and because ive got to fit a rear light and number plate i thinks its worth converting it..I did the same with my 95 KX5, but on that i did,nt need to change the subframe ,i bought a rear fender for a 2006 kx 250 and spent 2 days carefully shaving it with craft knives till it fitted, it certainly changed the whole look of the bike, but hey, that probably enough talk of KX500,s

I changed my bike over from 89 to the later style. I had to change the rear Sub frame, seat, fender, and both number plates. Everything bolted in just fine. I only used one bolt in my silencer though. I could have used both but the holes were like 1/4 in. out. With a little time and patience I could have used it but I was dying to give it a ride.

The 89 plastic looked better as far as condition of the plastic. I switched it over when all my buddies wanted to joyride and were wrecking it often. I would rather the rough plastic get broke up as the good stuff. haha The subframe and al parts that were changed came off a 91 or 92 CR 125 and they fit fine. If you are planning to move to an even later set of plastics of a 250 or something you may spend a lot of time with that. I have saw it done but the guy said it took forever with a knife working everything to make it look good.

Cool conversion. I've got an 89 tank and shrouds sitting around and I have a buddy that has a parts bike with the same stuff you put on yours.

The thing is, I have an 88. Does anyone know what that would entail? Or if it would be too much of a problem?

Too much of a problem , exhaust is a different shape 88 to an 89 onwards so it would be a PITA big time.
Plus the suspension linkages and shock are different as well.
Would not bother just my $.02

i did the update as well. my brother and i pulled the rear half from my 90' cr250 and put it on my 90' cr500. that, with an 04' front fender cleans up the look a bit.

It looks great except for the GAY! front fender.

The 02 / 03 fender looks better than that GAY! POS

The best looking fender of all is the 83-01, hands down with out a doubt.

No / yes, it is an 04-onwards fender which is used on the CR125-250 and the CRF250-450.

Is it a little bit harsh?, no thats just how I feel about that fender because it has a stupid shape.

If you are thinking of getting one, take a look at the 02-03 front fender and see what you think, you might like it better.

I have a black one and a red one floating around, If I stay with the red plastics I won't be using it.

Same goes with the black one as well.

If I decide to go with the white plastics, I won't need any of all the plastics I have.

I just need to work out what colour I am going with.

I don't know about your 01, but mine did not come with a 6 speed gearbox.

You should check out some of the prices on the CR250 as well, thats why it took me so long to get one.

I've got mine on the Trading Post for a ridiculous price with my old mis-matched plastics in the hopes I don't have to sell it and I can tell the wife it won't sell so I need to do an AFC ;)

Although mine also comes kitted out for SM racing as well as the dirt gear.

Most annoying thing was 3 months after I got my 00 there was a pristine 01 here locally in Darwin going for $6k. Cost me $1k in shipping just to get mine up here.

Such is life I suppose.

R7 - do you still have plastics floating around? I'm looking to get another set, wanting a full black set for motard duty :D

Yeah still got plastics in black, front and rear fenders, and the radiator shrouds.

Also some groovy black numbers on One Industries background, side covers are white as well as the front number plate.

The front fender is an 04-07 type/shape.

These plastics are on an 07 CR250.
