I was looking a that fork as well thinking I would like a better view.
I don't like the sound of that bearing either.

Yea i figure i am going to send the crank to Surf and turf for some wholesome balancing goodness and replace all bearings and seals. Start putting the thing back together and check for proper operation and try to figure out what the issue was. Either way i am glad to replace the fucked bearing and freshen up the bottom end. the balanced crank will be nice as well.

I keep this thread updated.. thanks for looking.

in this picture the rh shaft, 2 gears from the top is supposed to be engaged by the side teeth (dawgs) on the 3rd gear. Is the rh side of that dawg not rounded off? and the shift fork groove hace some wear n the dawg side and a little discoloring?
Nothing looks blue hot, but if theres markings below the pads at the tip on that fork, as it looked in the first picture than its junk

I took a better look at it this morning and Roosty has the golden eye. those dawgs are def rounded on the right hand side and the corresponding dawgs on the gear look exactly the same. Thanks. THis is only my second bottom end so im still learning as i go.

So both those gears need replaced and the shift fork too? the fork does have some discoloring and wear, might as well do it why im in there.

WHere is everyone ordering parts online from? should i go factory or aftermarket bearings?

do you know for sure what year that is?
you deffinately need the fork and the 2 gears
I'd also buy a 1X12 plank atleast 10ft long, and brackets, find some wallspace in the garage and your "trophy shelf" has its first 3 items

its definitley an 01. I have been riding this engine since 02 pretty hard and noticed the shifting was not as smooth as it used to be last year sometime, just a bit clunkier and missing shifts a bit more than usual. Shit man I am impressed the thing held up for 8 years of abuse as well as it did. im sure ill get another 8 out of it when its freshened up.

Great idea ont he trophy shelf ;) i have some yz250 parts that can go up there as well.

Then only order the pars for the 98+, theres gear widths that endup making a dawg slapping sound when mixed into older trans parts. The stuff is available in Canada if USA inventory is trouble

definitly replace the shift fork. what happens is the 2 sets of rounded dogs end up pushing eachother apart, and that directly stresses the shift fork causing it to bend. it doesn't take much of a bend for it to cause the next pair of gears to do the same.

   It took 8 years for 5th gear to shit it self.
My 84 500 took 14 months to shit itself and that was from brand new. :yikes:
Had to replace both gears and fork, fork was blue and melted , the damage was done all in one day.
