The old steelie '00 with an '87 is dead..
I pulled the steelie apart today to slap on the GSS top end and what do I find.....
So now im thinking WTF???? This top end was rebuilt 2.5 yrs ago with an eric gorr port job...
The main bearings have come apart and I now have 3-5 mm of side play and 2-3 mm up and down play in the rod....
The barrel is on its last overbore and it has 2 deep 4mm wide gashes down the sides, so no hope for another rebore.
Bear in mind I started this bike 5 days ago after it had been sitting for 4 months and it fired up 4th kick, yes the compression was down compared to my AF but she still ran great.
RIP good ole reliable '87
Stoffers is hopefully gonna come through on some good rod and rebuild deals

Its tripping me out how well it ran, sure it rattled a little and vibrated a bit but all 500s do! You can tell its been running like that for awhile as all of the bash marks have carbon buildup.
I would have never known untill it ripped apart the crankcase

show us some side by side pics of the bottom, like where the transfer ports and intake ports are, I'm curious to see the differences. I just ported mine myself and am very pleased with how it worked out, but I'm all into seeing everyones port work now

wow, what a difference! glens trasver port look liek the could cut you on the knive edging. the gorr job looks really "wham bam" like the knife edging doesn't go that far in and the gorr porting really didn't remove as much material from those 2 lower intake ports where the meet up with the tranfers. I removed close to as much material from that area as glen on my jug. I should have taken some pics before I installed it, but I was too excited!
LOL
Yeah, I'd have to say Glen is the man, that cylinder looks even better when its next to that gorr porting work.

was there any other damage from that stuff floating around in there? you can buy that one gear and replace that one bearing no prob.
when you go to replace that bearing, use an impact screw driver, don't even attempt it with a regular screw driver, you'll strip them.

There is scratching on the case and the shift forks are chewed on the ends, there is an 87 being split on ebay rite now so im gonna try to win the gearbox and crank.
