CR500 wheel model interchange..
CR500 wheel model interchange..
OK im still confused. Ive searched on here, and other boards for the last month.
I have a 96 CR500.
SOME people say the 500s axle size changed in 91.
SOME people say it changed in 96.
Neither one says what size any of them are, with a number.
i honestly dont know. my bike is a 25 hour drive from here and i cant pick it back up until the weekend..
according to what SOME people say CRF wheels cross over as a direct fit to 91-01 (or 96-01) CR500s. is this true?
my primary reason for asking, is someone has some CRF supermoto wheels for sale (eagle rims, Talon hubs) and i would like to know they will fit my axles.
if i need different bearings for them to fit, or make custom spacers, thats fine, but i need to know if they will fit.
any information someone could share would be great.
remember, this will come up on a search for someone in the future, so if you have a list of models that cross wheels over, listing them here would be helpful to them, even if it doesnt help me perfectly.
thanks,
-MrDude_1

I think the Rear 89-01 is the same on a cr500 I think the cr250 rear 96-99 same also maybe earler to. the fronts they mixed up a little.
but the crf has a bigger axle I have heard you can change out the bearings but dont know of anyone doing it yet . I am sure the guys here will answer your question .

'87-'89 ran 2 bearings instead on 3, but same axle size. the brake rotor was 6 bolt for '87-'89 and changed to 4 bolt until '01 on the 500s and '99 on the 250s. the hubs changed from black to bare in like '94 or '93, I can't remember. the 250s got a larger rotor in '97-'99 but the bolt pattern for the rotor is the same. basically a 500 can use a 500 rear wheel from '87-'01 and a 250 wheel from '87-'99

ok hold on a min. he is asking about a crf wheel fiting a cr500 late modle so you are saying that the late modle crf axle is the same size at the late modle cr500 axle in the rear?Slow old Fart wrote:The front wheel will work fine from the CRF with the right axle spacer combo the back will work once you machine a few spacers. it is no problem.
isent the axle dim. completly differnt? I know it is on the late cr250 stuff as I have cr500s from 89 to 01 and 97-99 gen 1 and 02 gen 3 the gen 3 stuff wont work on the anything but gen 3 ???????

You should have seen my best swap to date, I put a dirt track 19' front wheel on my 97 CR 500 and ran a 125 rear tire on it. it fixed the push but was kinda a pig but overall a improvment by far for sand riding.lewisclan wrote:its all good I just don want to give a new member the wrong info .
thanks for checking

YOUR saying cut a spacer down to the axle size or cut a spacer up to the size to a bigger axle . I know I am lame but WTF are you saying ? put it into axle size & bearing size in the hub mm.
Because You got me fricken lost

My guy machined new spacers that slide inside the CRF bearings on the rear wheel and reduced it down to the cr axle.lewisclan wrote:THAT DONT MAKE NO SINCE TO ME WHAT A SPACER IS, IS NOT THE SAME AS ABEARING .

I am glad I ran into this thread...I am trying to buy wheels for a 95' CR500 and needed to know if 91 wheels would work. Acording to what I read here I am a go for any wheels in the back but, the rotor size is different in the front but, the wheels is the same? If I buy the 91 wheels they will work on my 95 if I change the front rotor? Thanks....

The 95 and newer Cr5 have a larger front axle, you can machine a few axle spacers and the 91 will work. I run a 19" dirt track front rim of a earlier style Cr and made it work with little trouble on the later model setups. I am 99% sure rotor is the same size but has a different bolt pattern.xr680r wrote:I am glad I ran into this thread...I am trying to buy wheels for a 95' CR500 and needed to know if 91 wheels would work. What about changing the bearings to fit the smaller axle? I bought the wheel and now I need to make it fit........
If I went with a spacer do you still have the size or do I have to start from scratch?
Mr. Lewis If I make these wheels fit I won't need to barrow yours. What year is the other set of forks I bought from you? Do I have the paper work for the 85'?
