Ever had this happen?

Post by ou812 »

So 3 weeks ago I mixed up some fuel, 927 with 94 pump gas, did a first break in run on the new top end, 5 to 7 minutes total, drained all gas back into a steel can (old but clean paint thinner can, been used for gas for a few years) sealed tight. Today went out for the first real test ride, hour and half drive from home. Got there fill up the mixed fuel from the same can and went for a ride, it ran like shit, smokin a lot at idle and just plain not running good. so went down on the pilot and it does the ying ying thing being way lean but still lots of smoke. I pull the float again drain some fuel into a clear plastic cup, after a few second it appears the oil starts to separate from the fuel as a pocket of yellow seems to puddle a bit in the bottom. Ok now thats not to good but after another 2 minutes or so the fuel itself starts to go foggy and turned into what looked like very watered down milk. So I think maybe this was some weird effect from the plastic cup so I get a steel cup and again the same thing happens.........WTF?

ive never heard of the gas problem like that, unless it was 2 years old maybe. did you have your jetting same as before the rebuild? if the jetting is alittle off and you putt it around the motor will load up pretty easy and smoke. i still think the best way to break in a new motor is what jerry hall says: let it warm up to put some heat into the cylinder, then HAMMER down through the gears a few times

Gas was fresh out of the pump, them mixed, then sat in the can for 3 weeks.

Jetting is totally differant then before, this is the GSS trail ported barrel. Before when stock I could run 48, 172 now it is 178 and on the first fire up she was a tad leanat idle with a 55 pilot so killed it real fast and went to a 60, may be able to go to a 58 but airscrew is happy at about 1.5

The weirdest part was as the fuel starts to go cloudy it does it almost like a little cloud forming then it just goes all milky. Weirdest thing I've ever seen. Show 5 or 6 other guy's every one was freeked by what it did, and I test repeated it 4 times all with the same result.

Ya it ended the day and kinda goes without saying fresh gas from a differant pump is in order. Most likely some issue of water but the fact that it pours out of the bikes tank clear then turns cloudy after a few minutes is dam right weird.

not word for word he didnt say that, but when you read between the lines its pretty much the same.

full throttle 1st-2nd gear, then let off and down shift back into 1st- repeat this process 10min

full throttle 1st-2nd-3rd, then let off and down shift to 2nd then to 1st- repeat process for 10min

full throttle 1st-2nd-3rd-4th, then let off and down shift to 3rd then to 2nd then to 1st- repeat process for 10min

full throttle 1st-2nd-3rd-4th-5th, then let off and down shift to 4th then to 3rd then to 2nd then to 1st- repeat process for 10min and your done

so basically does that mean your supposed to ride the bike for about an hour the first time out following that procedure? any difference in break in for cast vs. forged pistons?

i dont know if theres much break in for a cast piston, but maybe someone else knows better because ive never used a cast piston. i used a wiseco and ran it through the gears for alittle bit and called it good, thats just me though

I have always believed that breaking a machine in properly has nothing to do with how it will be riddin...

I think the fuel issue is caused by winter gas having about 10% ALKY in it. The Alky might be absorbing moisture out of the air and since h2o and gas/oil dont mix they are seperating. This would also explain the milky appearance...

This is what I was thinking; have you tried some gas from a different source to see if it does the same thing?

Depending on where you live they will switch between winter and summer gas at different times; it will be listed on the pump. As far as I know all states us Alky but its possible a few may still use MTBE, which is not nearly as hygroscopic as Alky.
