$14 buys you a REAL service manual...with every spec, torque value, and description you could ever want, including for those pesky decompression scallops...

the scallops started later, I think it was '89-'90 when they started adding those. the '80s bikes took a real man to start!
they didn't have scallops and the pre '87 ones even had higher compression too. A lot of guys choose to bore to 1mm over to get rid of the scallops on the newer ones since they are power robbing
Honestly, from riding a modded '86 motor running really high compression with a 250 kicker on it, I would love one of those newer motors with the scallops, it really sucks when I have to start my bike on the side of a hill.

hey, ALL you guys can TRY to start mine next time I'm out. The only person other than myself who can start it is James Lewis (tough kid!)
MFDB can't start it and neither can anyone else who has tried
Its all about technique!

Does your technique resemble starting in a semi sitting position, getting the kicker to the very top of its' range, then sorta going into a jumping upright position and getting a very full kick? This was the technique I used on the 85' and it seems to work on the "new" bike too. I'm built kinda square though...5'10" and 215-220.dannygraves wrote:hey, ALL you guys can TRY to start mine next time I'm out. I've never seen myself doing it, but it can't look very graceful.

yup, I even get my left leg off the ground because I put everything into that kick. the trick is to use your leg muscles the most while throwing your weight down to back it up. there would be no way to start my bike standing on one leg while standing the whole time.
