new to the conversions point me in the right direction

Post by Richie B »

Hey guys. I just joined this sight, as directed by britincali from TT. I currently have an 03 CR250 that I would love to stuff a CR500 engine into. I really need a basic guideline of what I need/need to do. I've searched around, and it seems everyone does it differently so its kind of hard to get a baseline of what to do. I understand theres a member here that sells mount kits.. so that takes care of that. My next question is the "Y".. I see it mention everywhere. What do you guys actually do to it.. raise it to make room for the exhaust? I was also wondering if I could use my current carb, if the engine I buy doesn't come with one. I was planning on using the most current I can get.. '90+. When I first started looking into this, the headstay looked like one of relatively straight forward parts but I've now been told its one of the trickiest, wanna fill me in on that? I think thats it.. sorry for the huge post.. I'm real new to this stuff. Thanks guys.

This sight has already proved very helpful. Shanman for the headstay, dannygraves for the motor mounts.. sounds good. Now I still don't really know what you guys do to the Y's. I know when its done it looks like there was a lot of welding involved. So what is actually done to it? Also, does anybody still know if I can use my stock Mikuni TMX11C?

Thanks Alisobob.

heres the link to my 05 CR250R... http://www.bannedcr500riders.com/board/ ... php?t=1451
the 2 stroke conversions are a little different than the 4, the Y being a bit trickier on the 2 stroke, but everything else is pretty straight forward. i just found it easier to make my whole lower frame section from sheet instead of cutting it, raising it up, and just extending the legs....which works fine too, i just wanted it to look "works". You will love that bike when you are done.

Chachi's is beautiful, and probably the same amount of work as dickin' around and trying to rework the oem parts to fit.

if, for some reason Danny doesn't want to split a set of engine mounts out of his kits, I have four more sets that are not kitted. I need to make some more headstays, so there is a bit of lead time on those.

Chachi that bike really is good looking. It definetly has a clean look to it. I don't know if I'd go that way or the traditional way.. I'll have to decide. Shanman I'm in no rush, the planning is all starting to come together. Can you let me know when you have headstay's to sell?

Thanks Bob, and you too Richie... i wasn't trying to "steer" you to my style of frame mod as much as let you know about my two stroke chassis conversion.... i can send you specific pictures along the way of your build if ( i mean when) you have any questions on something in particular.... reworking the stock Y on a late model 2 stroke is harder than moving up the 4 stroke Y, but after you mod the frame everything is more straightforward with a 2 stroke. The 450 frame is an easier mod, but then you gotta jack with the fuel tank and airbox crap... my way is maybe a little more time consuming than modding the stock Y, although it's mostly just more time welding... once i got over being scared to try it, i found it was "easier" to make it all new my way than "struggling" modifying the factory stuff.... i also do not mind that mine appears very "not factory".... i know some builders prefer the opposite in a "nearly factory stock" look.... here is the link to that OTHER site where i posted my 450 conversion pics. http://cr500riders.com/cgi/yabb/YaBB.pl?num=1175063090
i used the Y from a 2001 CR250 frame so it would appear more "stock"..... so many ways to do it! Yeeeeeaaaaah...... and this site ROCKS!

So that link is of your 450 platform? Looks just as clean as the other one, thanks for the link. I just need all the info I can get you know? Instead of bothering you when I have problems with this, you think you can send me specific info about your 02 250 conversion now?.. so I have it WHEN I need it. Ahh there so many ways to do the Y.. and I understand one isnt 'better' than the other so its all up to me I guess.

Thanks for the replies guys.

ive done four bikes, my 05 the latest, this 02 CR250 is my first bike, just hogged and welded the stock Y and put top gussets on, modified the radiators and pics of where i put my coil and box so i didnt have to lenghthen the leads....stock 500 airboot glued to my stock 250 airbox.... your carb should work, but you gotta put the airboot on and then bolt the subframe in place.... its a tick loaded b r i t it works just fine....HATED to sell "the original", but did so to a good friend so i could buy my #2 450 chassis with the cali reg... Rode this bike to 2nd in intermediatte points STARRS...stock with the pipe......the said linky http://cr500riders.com/cgi/yabb/YaBB.pl?num=1123653338
Then the other link for the street legal 450 platform #2 build. Bone stock plus pipe and other than the last race, this is the bike i won the intermediatte points on this year in STARRS.. ive kept the plate stashed while i hunted for my RACE bike... its now retired to trips to 7-11 and work  http://cr500riders.com/cgi/yabb/YaBB.pl?num=1175063090
Then the #3 build 04 450 link to supermotojunkie... this is the blown up bike for sale i built for my race mechanic to test the latest style.
http://www.supermotojunkie.com/showthread.php?t=44517
Then my last build, MY hopped up RACE Bike, the 05 CR250! I just took what i learned on the 3rd 450 and made it the same way so i didnt have to hog the Y and pinch the frame spar
http://www.bannedcr500riders.com/board/ ... php?t=1451
I also want to say that iv'e ridden my 500's on dirt knobbies twice ( I know, thats lame! ) but i love 'em for supermoto so much i dont wanna tear 'em up so i just got an 07 stock 250 for dirt, but there IS a dirt section each lap of supermoto...hehe My collection is FINISHED! I am truly STOKED! GO FOR IT RICHIE! That should be enough to get a guy planning! :mebeer:

WOW. Chachi, thats TONS of great info and I greatly appreciate it. I have alot of reading to do. I skimmed through them all already, I'm about to read them word for word, but I think I saw in one of them that you just grinded out the Y and then reinforced the metal above? Would this be possible on my 03? If so thats an option I would definetly look at.. but until you respond... I'll be reading.

Thanks again Chachi

BTW.. that last smiley is a big no-no! I'm 14. :D

Post by chachi243 »

that would be the easiest way to do your 03, but i am still on the fence about thinning the frame spar to clear the water pump.... BUT, mine still hasnt failed and the rider ( my buddy i sold it to) is 250 lbs novice so its stronger than it looks.... but that is the only thing i never really liked about that first build, oh and the pulling of my motor in and out 47 times to keep checking the stock Y clearance....talk about time consuming!

Other sites might give you the boot because your a youngin', without a motor.

I hope this site can give you both the encouragement to build the bike of your dreams, and also give you the confidence to realize that anything you want bad enough is possible... Now, or 20 years from now.

Your own attitude can be the biggest obstacle in your way. Dont let it be.

Your very well spoken for a 14 year old... None of that L33T crap... Real grammar and punctuation. I'm impressed...

Yeah I definetly think that the grinding out/strengthening way is what I'll end up doing. I weight in at a wopping 140 pounds soaking wet so I think it can handle it. Now I just need to find an engine. I thought that would be relatively easy but I don't see many if any at all in craigslist or ebay and who knows what condition a 10 year old motor is in.. now I just gotta find a good welder.

Thanks for the compliments BTW.

I had the same problem trying to find an engine about 3 years or so ago. Your best bet, may be to buy a whole 500, and, part the rest.

Loose engines are usually loose for a reason.

2x on looking for a engine in chassis...

I'm in north New Jersey.. around 30 miles from NYC. The only whole bikes I've seen are 1500+.. I know I'd get alot back in the end but that initial payment might be a problem.

This guy is willing to part out his runner:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HONDA-CR ... enameZWDVW

Here are some other old auctions I have watched:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... Y.m311.lVI

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... Y.m311.lVI

I have bought 2 complete motors over ebay.
Ask lots of questions.
Pictures are good.
Video of it running is even better.

The best motor I have bought yet is an 85, which I took apart to check, and all I ended up changing is a ring. Its even on its stock bore in a re-sleeve!

The other motor I got has a "stop sign" cylinder. Its on the shelf waiting for a project to go into. It cost me a whopping $450 bucks.

I paid $900 for my 85 with the carb and electronics.

Happy hunting!

PS>
(try not to flame the guys who tell you they have a 550cc big bore re-sleeve, or they wont give you a good deal. Just get pictures of the piston they put in before you buy it!)
Yah, I'm from Saskatchetoon!
