Rounded countershaft bolt

Post by Tharrell »

I need some input from some of you gear heads.
The countershaft bolt on a bike I recently bought is rounded terribly.
Any thoughts or ideas?

Are we talking the hex cap that threads into the countershaft and holds the sprocket on?

File 2 new edges to remove it and then replace it.

What Mojo said,Weld a socket to it if need be get creative at this point it's one time use so you can get fairly barbaric on the bolt...treat your shaft well as always.

I guess the previous owner didn't think about taking it off while he was buggering it up.
Someone mentioned a turbo socket, anyone used one of them before?

Just grind a slot across it and take it out with an impact driver.

Or weld a nut to it and take it off with a wrench or socket.

Just a follow up.
I had 3 options and wanted to try the least abusive to the bolt just be cause I knew I could always cut a slot or weld a nut on it.
Just so happens a buddy had a set of those turbo sockets and never used them, says it was a gift.
Anyway, these damn things work.
The ones he has are 6 sided, unlike the ones I've seen that take a ratchet directly.
So I fitted the best size on it and a socket on top of that, put the ratchet to it and saw I was getting a bite.
Slapped an impact to it and it spun off in a heartbeat.
I recommend these turbo sockets.
Sears sells them.

Ya, it's an SK tool, lifetime warranty. In Canada we have a store called Canadian Tire who has a knock off set that seems to work as well. And if I bugger one it's a mile away and they'll replace it without a recipt.

It's kinda rare when something works like it's advertised.

These things saved my ass again. The impeller was rounded off too.
Damn, anybody with a toolbox should have a set of these.
