Cast aluminum can be welded. We have cracks welded in automotive trans/engine cases quite often.

These were marketed as Robson rods in Australia, and I bought some at an agricultural show years ago. Only thing I've ever used them for is bike radiators, and they work really well. It is only aluminum 'soldering' though, not welding, as there is no melting and fusing of the parent metal. Worth having in the workshop, I reckon.
