A combination of the 2 styles works best. See Groutaone's excellent effort, or my build thread. I love how smooth mine is with the new headstay, compared to how vibey it was with the original. (similar in concept to the second option shown above). Spent several hard hours on it today smashing whooped out single track at Metro Road, and loved it. Ripped a rear Michelin to bits, tho !

Sorry, I don't know how to post a link here. My thread is called "Gen 4 CRF 450 X build ", and the headstay stuff is on page 2. (in 'A/F's only', of course ). Groutaone is easiest to find on YouTube. You'll have quite a few vids to sift through, but it's an amusing way to pass an evening !
