if your gonna spend time on a conversion at least make it a 2 stroke... especialy since its a ktm
the 450 will have less power and will be harder to start, and will be heavier, but to make up for it it will require more maintenance.

It actually is quite interesting.

The CR500 is an acquired taste. If you don't like it, acquire some taste...

If I could have found a KTM roller, that's what my 87' engine would be sitting in.

Am I the only one who thinks RFS motors are not worth the effort?

I've had nine KTM's ove the years, still have an 08 and none of the chassis' were worth transplanting an engine into until 08. bad stock suspension from 98 until a couple of years ago and mediocre handling until 08.

I was thinking though that putting an old KTM big bore in one of the new chassis' would be pretty cool. trouble is KTM engines seldom break, even the 4 strokes so I think finding a newer roller would be tough.

A guy here in Sweden did almost the same. CR500 in a KTM 450 -08 chassi, built in a week. I know the thread is in swedish but there's a lot of build pictures if you wanna take a look. There is also a youtube clip.

KTMs, of any type, cark it like any bikes do, especially if you don't take care of them. Or, are just plain unlucky.

There's a nicely :P blown up 350 in the 4t section, right now - it looks Very Expensive to fix.

It's rare not to find complete rolling chassis in KTMtalk 's classified section.
Last week , I'm sure I saw a couple of 2010's, for about $1400 / $1600.00

At this moment, there is a 2011 250 /300 PDS chassis, minus forks, brakes and wheels. Usually , you can get entire rollers.

There's a fair few blokes there that seem to make a living selling KTM parts.

Trouble with Old 500 / 540s, is it's a reverse engine, You'd have to mess around with swapping sides for sprockets and brakes. But, like most things, it can be done.

4T and 2ts, have different swingarm to engine widths - I can't recall which is wider, or narrower, off hand.

I've just got a full front end, and a TTX shock, for a great price.

I've already done 2 ktm to ktm hybrids: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=662808

I got a good deal on a Craigs list CR5 and already had a ktm roller in the garage. It should be a simple build
