Desert Gearing?
I'm heading down to Spangler Hills for a week of riding between Christmas and New Years and was wondering what kind of gearing people are running in the desert. I'd rather show up set to ride than mess around with changing out sprockets once I get there. My bike is currently set up for more low end/woods riding.
I've got a 97 motor in my AF and am running an 18inch rear.
Thanks!

According to the calculator, top speed with a .79 5th gear & 16/40 sprocket set (is that even possible???) is only 95.6 mph.
The .87 5th found on the 88-92 models with the same sprocket set is only 86.8.
So is it even possible to get 100mph out of one of these? And how much clutch slippage would be required to get it to move off the line?
I'm thinking about a SUMO build, and would like to be able to hit the ton, on the race-track, of course...
DOH!!! Sorry- I just realized the calculator was working with a 6k rpm max. when raised to 7.5k, the 100 mph comes up at a gearing of 14/42 & 15/40.
My question is still the same though. Will the 15 tooth sprockets physically fit on the bike (countershaft), and how much abuse will it put on the clutch?
Regards,
M.R.

I run 14 50 almost everywhere, from Hoonfest rockhopping to whooped out desert blasting. I don't think my bike will do 100 but its as fast as anything anyone else is riding.....I never get walked on because of power/speed. The people who leave me would do so on pretty much anything. If it was straight line running down a fire road maybe but I avoid riding that kind of stuff. I did run one day at Hoonfest on a 13 front....I honestly couldn't tell the difference.

I tried all sorts of combos and found that 14/49 on a W/R set was pretty good everywhere... a little tall for the hairy shit and a little low for open fire roads.

ran 15/40 at a recent desert race and nearly pooped my pants, really scared myself running 15/37 in practice and decided to tone it down and only ended up with 2 broken ribs that weekend
No problems running a 15 tooth front sprocket, poking around the the bush here i run 15/47.

if there's one thing dad likes more than serenity… it's a two stroke engine on full throttle!

Just a quick followup on the 14/52, I like it a lot, running hill 5 at glamis pulled hard though the gears. Dunes good too.Kuma wrote:I have been running a 14/50 on my '01 all dune riding. just put a new chain and sprockets on and went with 14/52, I am seldom running for long stretches at speed.
I'll put in my after new years on how I like it
