Going to pick up a 2001 CR5 for Xmas.
Will be riding in Arizona..........
I will need springs, Eibach I assume. Though, I also am looking for recommendations on the following parts:
Skid plate...ricochet?
Gase guards but I would hope the skid plate would protect the case.?
Frame guard...not sure if metal or UFO plastic woul be better?
Pipe guard...Maier?
Kickstand...Promoto billet?
Front brake lever...sun line V1?
Steering stabilizer...Scott's, but I want a mount that I don't have do do any welding?
Later on maybe a carb and desert porting...Pwk 39.5 or bigger?
So I am looking for recommendations on the above listed parts.

X3 on the piston check.
Race tech, eibach, whatever as long as the rate is correct for your weight.
Skid plate, nice and thick, not sure what the good brands are
case guards not needed with good skid plate
Frame guard, also not really needed just cosmetic, I run the Aluminum ones plastic I am sure is fine, I wouldn't have them if they weren't on a bike I parted totally unneeded.
Pipe guards, some guys swear by them, I have a few pipes that have them and some that don't. They dont work on stock pipes.
Never had a kickstand but everyone loves the PMB one if your getting one.
Brake lever is a total preference thing.
I don't like steering stabilizer's but would get the Scotts over anything else. Not sure why you don't want a weld on stem.
Ride it before you port it, they have a ton of power. Mine is bone stock and nothing really runs on it. CR500 has enough power bone stock that it really comes down to the rider. I will smoke a crappy rider with a killer port job and a killer rider will smoke me no matter how much material I remove off that jug.

If you insist on the bolting on, just forget the whole thing....
This is the weld on tower..... firm and secure.
Bolt on = LAME.

I would pull the stator cover. I brought a 1997 in 2000 for $1500 because the bottom end needed rebuilt.
I just spent around $300 on a top end rebuilt on by 1991.(cracked piston)
So if you can not pull the reed cage and look for cracks before buying, you may spend $300 later.
Just remember to check piston when you get it home. A crack piston could break and mess up the whole motor.
Do not just check the exhaust side, but do both. (reed and exhaust)
I just checked the exhaust side when I got it my 1991, but not the reed side until 3 months later. I got lucky it did not shatter.
