Long time lurker. I have a 1991 CR500.

Been riding since 1982 When I lived in San Bernardino, Ca. First bike was a 76 KX400. My dad had to start it for me and I did not get out of second gear. Next was more my size, a 71 SL100 dual sport, then the following 77 YZ250, 84 XL600. Total the XL600 into a truck in 1991 when I was 20 then moved to Kentucky. Did not ride from 91 to 94. Got a 91 YZ250 in 1994. Then I wanted something bigger and got the 97 CR500 in 2000. Sold it in 2003 and got into quads, 01 Raptor 660, 98 Grizzly 600, 2005 Grizzly 660 , 2003 Raptor 660. Now I am back on 2 wheels.

Thanks to a post from Bob to check the piston for cracks, I took off the reed valve and it was cracked. I got a Vertex piston and got the cylinder bored 1 over. Now i just need to put it back together.

This is absoultly the FIRST THING any new owner of a CR500 should do.

If the piston scattered, you would have had a real mess on your hands...

Welcome aboard. What part of Ky are you from? I'm just outside of Ashland and I'm hoping to log more seat time this year. My group is hoping to make some trips to East Lynn, Rush and Briary this year if any of that is close to you.
