Hey Bob,
I've got a dgn needle right now, in the 2nd clip position from the bottom (richer) and at about quarter throttle it's surging a little bit. Everywhere else seems to be running good and clean. 38 pilot, air screw about a half turn out, (depending on conditions) 172 main, the carb is a CPW 39.5 PWK. Any recommendations? And if your making a run, I'll take two different needles in the direction you think I should go.

There's a fine line between "just enough throttle", and "way to fuggin much"

I know, it does seem like 38 would be lean, but it didn't like 42 or 40. Had to go 3+ turns on the air screw with the 40. As soon as the 38 went in it cleaned right up at 1/2 turn. It idles like a dream, and has good snap off bottom. It just has a surge issue around 1/4 throttle. I was thinking about those two needles, but I thought I'd get some opinions first. Idealy I would like to have a turn-turn in a half of adjustment on the air screw, but three+ I'm not cool with. Thanks 2stroke,2strokeforever wrote:38 is pretty leanand at about quarter throttle it's surging a little bit. Everywhere else seems to be running good and clean

Sounds like your using cheap-o, knock-off jets.STUCK IN 500 LAND wrote:I know, it does seem like 38 would be lean, but it didn't like 42 or 40. Had to go 3+ turns on the air screw with the 40. As soon as the 38 went in it cleaned right up at 1/2 turn.
Does it say "RD" on it, or does it have the Keihin star on it?
IF IS SAYS "RD", THROW IT AND ANYTHING ELSE YOU HAVE AWAY!!!!
I think you have a bad pilot either way. I'll get you a new pilot.

Not sure what needles are worth, but I've got two bikes to sort the jetting on, I'm thinking DGN DGM and DGL, almost may as well get two of each. Would you be able to mail them to me, I'm in Ontario Canada... Just let me know what the needles and mailing/shipping will be and I can paypal you right away. If this is possible it'd be awesome since the local carb parts place looked at me like I had two heads when asked and about dgn needle!

Nope, all genuine jets (with the star K on them) I hate knock offs. I went through the carb recently. Cleaned everything (all the circuts) I'll take a new 40 pilot though, just for piece of mind. It does seem like a night and day difference between the 40 and 38, I didn't think it would change by more than a turn on the airscrew. I might have a 40 that got by quality control. Either way, thanks Bob, I value your opinion on this stuff.AlisoBob wrote:Sounds like your using cheap-o, knock-off jets.STUCK IN 500 LAND wrote:I know, it does seem like 38 would be lean, but it didn't like 42 or 40. X2 on that! My local dealer/parts counter couldn't understand anything I wanted. Asked me three times if I wanted to order a stock needle. I told him he was a waterhead and left.
