carb bowl drain drips

Post by robfromga »

Noticed tonight while the bike was idling on the stand that the bowl drain was leaking oil. Bike shows no signs of carb problems. No bog, no hesitation, starts cold good, and hot 1st 95% of the time.

What to check?

Man, I've chased those drips myself, specially on vintage bikes.
One time the bowl was cracked and almost impossible to see.
Petcocks crack too.
The cleaner the bowl is the better when chasing this down.
Take the carb apart and soak it, let it sit for a day or so.
Blow it dry and make sure all passageways are clear with a can of carb cleaner with a tube.
Inspect it with a magnifying glass if possible, specially around the corners where you put it back together.
Not much else to say except take your time and look at it really good.

The float needle has vanes on it , to center it.

Pull the needle out to inspect, most likely these vanes have worn flat spots due the the vibration in the 500.

The flat spots cause the float needle to stick, whick causes the overflow out the bowl vent tube.

Yeah, kind figured the float needle wasn't seating or something.

2 questions..
I've got two daysof riding this weekend, with friends coming from out of town. It rides fine now, will it start to run bad? Im leary of tearing it apart and finding something i can't replace in one day.

Pwk, who's got the best price?

Had a carb out of the blue start dumpin gas changed 3 floats out and same thing

Ended up being the brass insert that presses into the carb was bypassing the float valve and leaking between the carb and brass insert???????

I flipped it upside down and blew into the fuel line and found the leak!!!!!
