'88 Frame Picture and Questions

Post by plynn41 »

I've begun the process of restoring an '88 bike I bought recently. I plan on putting my '85 motor in it. The bike is mainly straight and intact, but the lower frame rails have been crushed.

Here is a picture of the bottom of my '88 frame.

Two questions:
1)Should I be concerned about strength in view of these bent rails? I can weld a sleeve over them if it is justified--but I'd rather just use it as is.

2)What do you recommend for painting the frame and subframe? I don't think the frame is cherry enough to justify powder coating. How do you fellow hoons restore a frame?[/img]

I'm parting out my 88' I have the frame for sale for $20, it does not have a title. Maybe you can use the tubes from my frame and have them welded to yours???

Thanks guys, but I don't think it's as bad as it looks. The rust is only on the surface where the paint is missing--the steel is solid. I've put a tape measure on the frame and it's not twisted at all. Also, I've got a perfectly straight '85 chassis that I can cannibalize the lower frame rails off of if I need to (but thanks for the offer). I'm more inclined to "scab" over the crushed rails with an appropriately sized half pipe (you know, one that has been ripped.) Then cover up the repair with a skid plate when I'm done.

Believe it or not, this is a fairly low hour bike that was on the original bore. All the chassis bearings are clean and good. A previous owner must have gotten crazy riding in big rocks--or maybe trying to unload the bike out of a pickup without a ramp.

why the hell did you ask if you don't want to hear the truth? Christ a good used frame is cheap.

Again, to be clear, there is no rust. Most of the discoloration you are seeing is tar from being rode on fresh blacktop. I spent two minutes with a wire brush and the rails shined up like virgin steel, except for the dents. :D

I wanted to know if the dented frame rails were a safety issue, and I wanted to know how to paint it. Got three responses and an insult.

1. Painting advise--thanks!
2. Offer of another frame--thanks, but I don't need one!
3. Suggestion to throw the mangled french whore in the trash. Don't know what mangled means to you, but the geometry in this bike is uncompromised, and as stated, there is no rust. If some of you really think the dented frame rails are safety concern, then I'll weld the cradle from my '85 frame in place and fix it right.
4. Insult--well, whatever. Get a life man!

to guess if there would be any issues from the dents is a tough call. i would be more concearned with rust but you say there isnt any rust to speak of. give it a shot i suppose. worst case is you weld in new rails later if theres any problems. dont know what else to say.
