Hard Starting

Post by cmotodad »

My 90 500 is hard and at this time not starting. Upon checking, spark it seems to be sporadic. What I consider not consistent. I am not sure to go to the CDI, stator or coil? Any ideas? Thanks Bob

Spark plug clean? Gapped correctly? Check all wires/connections first. Make sure they all are clean and tight and no wires are broken/frayed anywhere - check spark plug boot where it meets plug and its attachment to the coil wire. Disconnect kill switch for time being to rule that out. If that doesn't work, check resistance on your stator. If its out of range, you may have to replace it with a working unit.

Just some ideas to get you started....good luck!
The CR500 is an acquired taste. If you don't like it, acquire some taste...

Thanks, I had already disconnected kill switch, retighten and cleaned spark plug cap plugged, even clipped ends for new wire and cleaned all connections and replugged. At one point the wires from the staor where slightly out of the plug. I am just puttung together an AF and this engine and electronics has bee n moved to the new frame. When purchased, it was only started monentarily. I am not sure of the history is my point. Do you know where I can find the specs for checking stator? Thanks Bob

OK, here is a strange one. After double checking everything, a little frustrated, I pour a bit of gas in the plug hole. 2 kicks later, fires right up. Nothing changed. Start it a few times later no problem. I just trouble with the PJ carb, so I put a PWK I had lying around. Before gas in the plug hole, I check float level, tip to side to see fuel from vent hose, all there. Now it starts. Yes, the carb was completely cleaned prior to install, pilot, main, passages, needle and seat. Still do not get it. Thanks Everyone, Bob

The PWK has a dedicated idle circuit, where as the PJ has a combo idle speed / idle mixture circuit.

I know of knowone who has put a PWK on, that later went back to the PJ.

The PWK is superior all the way around.
