So I was reading something and it said the Baja 1000 will be 50 years old this year. Checked around to make sure and it was true. I called up the guy who payed for the 500 when we did it a few years ago and he said "what are you thinking?" I told him I thought maybe we should run it. So at first I was thinking maybe I could ride 1300 miles on my own...kind of a crazy idea but I'm always up for something stupid. The guy who pays for all this didn't want to do it like that because he wants to do his ceremonial couple miles off the start and didn't want to mess up an Ironman attempt with his 2 miles...I agreed. So I have a guy here at work that I ride with, he is like 27 and rides like the wind, he can keep it on 2 wheels and has been racing our local races that can be really gnarly. I am as tired from a 100 mile local race as I was after riding 499 miles of the 500 so he got the nod. We will be riding an XR650r for what I feel are obvious reasons. We have mine and one other for practice and will be setting up another bike to race. We will bring all 3 bikes to Mexico and the 2 practice bikes will prerun and be used for parts if needed. The guy who pays for it all has a plane and a few buddies with planes so it looks like we will have air support. He pays for the pits so Baja pits or whoever will take care of us there. We both have to ride 500 plus miles, ride through the dark, and just keep it moving and keep it on 2 wheels. It will start on my 47th birthday November 17th...pretty cool birthday party I think. It is a tip to tip race and if I can get that finishers pin it will be another check mark on my bucket list. Wish Us Luck!!!!

Guess I should have updated this, Sponsership....if thats what we are calling it fell through. My buddy who has paid for all this Baja madness had some unfortunate circumstances hit his life and before the start of the summer had to back out. I got to keep the helmet race lights he had purchased and the new GPS unit, so that was kind of cool. I am in about the same shape as usual which means I am not necessarily fit but was ready to run as many miles as needed in Baja.

When we rode the 500 I ended up friends with some of the guys who run for the wounded warriors and another team that just runs for fun but tries to remain competitive in class. I got calls from both of those teams as it appeared at one point that they were going to be short a man but nothing materialized and to be honest running a few hundred miles doesn't sound like as much of a challange as I like.

If this whole thing is super important to me then I would need to step up and pay for it...I guess its not. I do have the practice bike that was purchased, a street legal XR650R that is beyond super clean for sale, other than that the Baja dream is over for a while. Might be a retirement thing.

Bummer that it didn't work out....
But on the other hand what are you asking for the 650? I've been kicking around the idea for some time about getting a dual sport and I'm still stuck between the xr650l a KTM 500exc or the 650R.......

I think we paid $2700 for it if memory serves, it is very very clean....but the street legal part is Nevada, not sure how that all works in California. Check with Bob, he was selling his and street legal in CA.

$2700 isn't bad at all I'm not worried about the reg as long as the bike is 2003 or older.
