How is the reliability - have you had any problems with it?

Re: 4T

Thanks guys - I am tempted to wait until the spring, keep the 500 and get a new one as well. I do need to find one to ride though. My bike got an 1985 engine with a CR250 ignition and I love the arm wrenching power it has and I too only ride for the fun of it when I get time. The thought of keeping...

YZ450F OR KX450F VS. CR500

I am considering getting a new YZ450F or a KX450F and I was wondering what people think of them? Anyone own one out there - have any problems with it? I have never rode one and none of my friends have one. What is the power delivery like as compared to the CR500? Would I be bored on it coming from a...

Jetting

My motor is a 87 it is suppose to have a 55 pilot but plug is black I will switch back to the 52 pilot which the plug looked much better both idled ok and ran similar Stock jetting is a starting point - many factors impact jetting. The best way to get it as good as possible is to learn to read the ...

Re: CR 500 will not idle

I need help my 96 will not idle. You can get it to idle only by holding the throttle slightly open. At which time it will idle very nice, but release the throttle and it dies. The carb is now a PJ and it is stock with the correct jettting for this area and temperature, The air screw was 2 turns out...

Stand

I have one on mine with the frame guards and didn't cut anything. I undid the bottom bolt of the frame guard, installed the PMB stand and then messaged the guard back in with a hammer. The bike is a trail warrior not a queen by any means but the whole fit looks factory. Cool thanks - I ordered mine...

Promoto Billet Stand with Frame Guards

Has anyone out there ever installed the promoto billet kick stand with works connection frame guards on a 89 - 01 CR500? I am sure I could do it with some mods but I am just wondering if someone else has done this and how extensive the mods were. I hate chopping either but I cannot carry a triangle ...

Kicker

I bought the ECB clutch removal tool - well worth the $20.00. I finally got time to replace the kicker stop plate - got tired of re-positioning the kicker every time I started the bike. Once I replaced it, the kicker engaged exactly where is should and my kicker bolt could finally get some Loctite.

Re: Carb help?

Gentlemen, I have a 1990 CR500R, as seen in the steelie forum a while back. Can somebody explain how the idle adjustment/choke knob thingamabob works? The bike runs great, but won't idle. I cant get a response from turning the choke knob in either direction. Thanx in advance. Slugboy If your idle a...

Success Story - CR250 Ignition

I always loved the way the 250s reved and loved the torque of the 500s. I built an AF with a 1989 engine that had lots of power but I missed the 250 style powerband. This time I built a 1996 CR500 steelie with a 1985 engine with 1996 OEM reed cage, standard 38 mm carb and a 1993 complete CR 250 igni...

I got Boyesen Super Stock reeds on a 96 cage in my 1985 engine - they run awesome, they are cheap and this coming from a guy who loves vForce.

if you're stuck for a tool bolt an old fiber to an old steel, that holds the hub and the basket together. shove a penny between the basket and crank gear. I used old plates the last time but for tha sake of $20.00 I think I will just buy one. Besides I have to wait for the parts anyway. So it does ...

match the retainer tab to the kicker arm, you can mix the spindle, but the older coarse ones will not engage at the very top The last time when I replaced the kicker gear I removed the clutch basket. Is it possible to get the starter gear out without removing the clutch basket? I ask because if not...

match the retainer tab to the kicker arm, you can mix the spindle, but the older coarse ones will not engage at the very top I lined up the punch marks on the shaft and gear like the book said. The kicker sits in the right place but moves perhaps 6 inches before engaging and the bike wants a full k...

I wonder then if my 1994 starter spindle (in my 1985 engine) requires the appropriate stopper plate in order to engage in the correct place?

Kicker

I noticed that stopper plate for the kicker assembly is a different number on the 1985 engine than say the 2001. Does anyone know if these are shaped differently - I mean perhaps one has a steeper angle or is shorter?

Compression

Well I have no worries about the compression - I just got off the bike and it starts perfectly, idles and pulls like a jet. She pulled the front wheel in every gear I tried so far with ease and in most cases I had to slack off on the gas since the front was still rising. I have a slight surge on idl...

The bike starts so easily now that a shorter kick may suffice anyway - will try today.
