The 250f is a very tight fit, I've seen the SH ones and not liked their engine clocking or any of the fitment.
The 250f is better suited to the cr250 conversion. I've done one with a 2001 engine and it was very nice. The 4 cr500 gen5 conversions I've built have been in the crf450 frame.

Finally Got time to finish my cover up. Ended up replicating the oem cover except out of some 6061. I have the solid model for anyone who is interested. Cover came out really good I'm happy with it.

I just finished my 97 CR500AF myself. I agree that the chassis was not Hondas greatest achievement however this is the CHEAPEST and EASIEST AF conversion. Took me longer to sell my 250 motor and buy a 500 motor. I found me a good local machine shop and the total conversion cost me about $150. Here ...

JMHO, but that's a lot of work for something you can buy used and I'd bet there's enough for sale. Unless you are just looking for a project. If you're going to do an AF conversion, do a big bore.
