Is Bill's still in business? Are their pipes prices in line with FMF/PC? Their website has been "under construction" or "coming soon" forever. I ran Bill's pipes on my CR125s all through the '90s, partly because Steve Lamson and Doug Henry used them, but they were bad ass.

Pilot is probably too lean, rule of thumb is around 1 turn, less than half turn you are too lean, more than 2 turns too rich. That wont cause the fluctuation though, that sounds like an air leak.

Never used the MB5 but I know its a good tire, probably a bit better in very muddy conditions than the MT16, but the MT16 is great in hard pack and rocks too so I'd say better overall.

I love that tire, I use the front on everything, and I use the rear on anything strong enough to turn it, its too big for 125s. They are super durable, great on almost any terrain, and very flat resistant. I think the only reason more people dont use it is because it doesnt have a modern, fancy &quo...

Pirelli MT16 rear tire? I love those tires, I use them on all my vintage bikes, I'm going to try one on my '92 CR5 when the current tire needs replacing.

A shorter silencer increases bottom end power, a longer silencer softens the bottom and has more pull on top. Shortening the tuned length of the expansion chamber increases top end.

Ride report. The top clamp is not an issue because I measured between the tire and the fender and you have to have the forks 5mm below the little line to have minimum tire clearance, which is where the fork is at when it hits the handlebar. Odd since the 47mm forks are longer, but the tape measure d...

I'm going to ride it seriously for the first time tomorrow, but they feel great. As far as VitalMX, I'm on there too, and you have to keep in mind that 99% of those idiots dont ride, they just talk shit on the interwebs. Why wouldnt they work? You and I know they're just forks, a little bigger and a...

47mm Showa TC fork swap

I finished doing the 47mm Showa fork swap on my '92 Steelie. I got a set of '96-"01 triple clamps on eBay that had an Applied Racing top clamp on it, got it cheap too. I used the '92 brake hose, but I got everything else from an '04 CRF450 that way I didnt have to worry about spacers and calipe...

The forks and shock on the '99 are a significant upgrade. I like the steel frame bikes too, and like you said, the '99 will give you a path to upgrade to Showa TCs at a later date. For the $400 price I really dont see how you can go wrong with the '99 roller.

Donno what guys who do it "correctly" charge, I pay $35 at a local machine shop, but like I said, I bolt the torque plate on the cylinder when I drop it off, and I prefer to chamfer my own ports. I'd guess somewhere in the $60 range for someone that does it all for you correctly.

I make my own torque plates and let the machine shop use them while they do my cylinders. The '92 I just bought has the stud scar thing going on, gonna make a torque plate for it before I take it to be bored.

I had an '81 450 (its actually 430cc) a few years ago. Terrible bike, the trans ratios are all jacked up and the power is either on or off, nothing in between. Not only that, but the chassis is terrible too, the first year of the Pro-Link had the rising rate all wrong (too much rate increase). The '...

I would start by making sure all the grounds are good. Make sure the coil is grounded with clean metal to metal on the frame, make sure the cases are getting a good clean metal to metal contact to the frame, take the stator off and make sure the base of the stator is clean and making good contact wi...

Whacked out jetting often goes right back to air leaks, bad plug wire, bad ignition, or some other electrial gremlin. The carb prolly' isnt the problem. Yup, I'd bet money on an electrical problem, or an air leak. I tried to jet my '79 Maico 440 for about 6 months, just could NOT make it right. It ...

It was very blubbery, but it was a borrowed bike and I didnt want to start tearing it apart. It probably needs a new float needle and a different slide needle. He also had the clamps too low on the forks and the rear preload was way too much for my weight, so it wanted to tuck the front end really b...

Yep, I only do Cross Country in AHRMA but I do most of the CC National series and I race Vintage MX with South East Vintage. There isnt really any MX in the AHRMA SE region since SEVMX split from them in '08.

I have four bikes with Lectron carbs, all older Vintage air cooled big bore two strokes, Penton/KTM 400s, Maico 440s, etc. They all start 1st kick and they all run flawlessly, almost like fuel injection. As I said, I have zero experience with a Lectron carb on a CR500, but I fail to see why it could...

I've had good luck with Moose and PW kits, and you are correct, even though OEM might be better, the ease of buying one part number and getting everything at one time is worth it. As for clutch plates, everything but the fibers are fine aftermarket, but the Honda fibers are as good as you can get. A...

Ah...I forgot about the freeplay issue. You could lap some aluminum drive plates to thin them to allow you to get the right freeplay I guess. It would be tedious to do it by hand, but you could do it.

New Alabama owner

I just bought a '92 CR5 a few weeks ago. I live in Valley Alabama near Auburn about 80 miles SW of Atlanta. I'm 43 and I've been riding since I was 3 years old, but I never owned a CR500 before. I have 26 other motorcycles ranging from a '63 Maico 250 Scrambler, a '63 Honda CL160, lots of Pentons, C...
