That is a sweet machine. Just out of curiosity, does the electric starter have any issues firing up the 500?

Thanks for the reply and info, Unfortunately im running the shorty plug which are over $50 a pop in Aus. I will grab some cheap normal plugs and just leave the tank loose for the testing. That way I can cut them up with out crying

Cheers

If someone has an 89 or newer clutch basket lying around could you possibly grab a vernier and measure the inside diameter of where the main bearing runs and let me know please. Thanks a lot

Is it possible to replace the bearing in a welded crank?

I have a welded crank that I want replace the big end bearing on. I spent good money having it balanced so I dont want to throw it out. Is it possible for a shop to mill the welds and press the pin out or is it a throw away?? Cheers

Destroyed piston and barrel - with pics

This happened to me a few weeks ago while I was racing at finke. It must have been running damn lean to cause this I guess but the wierd thing is it ran a a peach on the 230klm run down and started fine the next day for the run back but only lasted 6klm. It all seemed to happen in about 5 seconds, I...

Hey scooter, sounds like george made a meal of yours if you had to rework it. I must have got a bit lucky as my motor bolted up ok. The welds are shit but huge so it shouldn't break in half. Small stuff like not using radius'd tubing is pretty poor too. I have powdercoated mine so it looks alot bett...

how did you come up with the 56% ??? when you get it finished let me know how it works I trawled forum's for ages and found someone that had used this figure in an AF and it was smoother through the midrange to top end. Apparently the stock cranks run between 59-62%. My engine is going into an 08 C...

Where to get a crank balanced?

I was wondering if anyone can recommend a place to have a 89 CR500 crank balanced? Unfortunately the place I sent mine to in Australia has vanashed from the face of the earth and taken my crank with them. Ideally I need a long rod crank supplied, rebuilt and balanced. Looking for a balance factor of...

The bike may be a 90 but I think you will find the motor is either an 85 or 86 as the coolant line runs to the rear of the barrel and there is no seperate clutch cover. They have a shorter stroke and run one less clutch plate also

Thanks for the info and links, There is very little on the net about actual balance factors so I think I will go with 56% and see how it goes. I want it smoothest in the 4000 - 7000 rpm range.

Crank Balance Factor

Hi, can someone let me know what a good balance factor would be for my AF crank? Im going to get the crank balanced but have heard all sorts of numbers from 52% to 74%. If someone knows a figure that has worked well for them that would be good. The engine is an 89 model
