If you're still not getting good weld penetration, post up what type
of welding you're doing and your settings. Might just need to tweek
your settings.
Good luck with it.

OK, I know preheat is needed, Actually, it's not. Welding on these Aluminum frames is considered pretty light duty and any decent TIG or MIG rig will get the job done without going anywhere near it's duty cycle. If you are concerned about the tubing moving around going from cold to hot and back, ju...

Reusing OE "Y"?
This question is for those of you that have replaced the cradle on your conversion and used the stock "Y" piece. I am trying to clean out the old tubing from the "Y" and the frame. So far I have tried a cut off wheel and a flap wheel on a grinder, a die grinder with a carbide bit...

Nope, you speak out both sides of your mouth... Nope! You're being intenionally obtuse. I said that cylinder angle and center of mass were important considerations when engineering the engine location in a frame, and that even a few degrees makes a noticeable difference, and backed that up by citin...

If your really all that concerned about the time, effort, blood , sweat, and tears that the Honda Engineers put into the final chassis layout Actually, I don't think I could give less of a rat's ass what the Honda engineers did or didn't do. you would want the two stroke engine AS UPRIGHT AS POSSIB...

C/S position has little , if anything , to do with it True, and the distance between the C/S and the swingarm pivot bolt is fixed. Motor clocking will slightly effect the bikes center of gravity, but I doubt its enough to ever notice. Also true, except the part where you won't notice it. Rotating t...

If you really want to cut your powder coating cost, do all or most of the prep work youself. Media blast with AO or Soda, wipe it down with acetone, plug up threaded mounts with silicone plugs, tape up the model plate and provide the powder. About 2 hours of labor. A fair powder coater shouldn't cha...

Yeh, the only time I paint a frame is if the owner insist or if the bike will be a dust collector (show only). You can powder coat the frame and subframe with less than a pound. I sell the color matched powders (Tahitian Red, Flash Red, Fighting Red and Shasta White), for $15 a pound plus shipping. ...

Thanks for the info. I still want to use the 00-01 cradle shape so I'm going to try to replicate the 00-01 cradle using the correct 08/09 compatible tubing. I'll have to find a competant shop to do the bends. With Aluminum, they may have to use something like hydroforming to prevent kinks. Looks lik...

You're starting on your frame before I am, I'm still building the engine. Keep us posted on the cradle compatibility with the gen 4. At first look, It appears to be a good match. And as you said, Everything but the hanger plates will already be correct. You'll need to find a place for the ignition m...

I'm working on a similar idea using an 09 CRF250R frame and a 00 CR250 engine. I'm still looking at all the options for the frame but to keep the weight down, I lean toward using the cradle from a gen 2 CR250 frame instead of a billet cradle. The stock CRF cradle doesn't provide the needed clearance...

I totally agree with you about the gen 4 being superior to the gen 5. Typical to Honda, they took a good thing and went backwards. I'm in the early stages of a CR250 build and I would prefer to use a gen 4 frame because I think my gen 4 500 is just about perfect. Unfortunately, I also want to use wo...

I have ridden and raced every year CR250 and 500 since 92. I switched to CRFs in 04 then back to CRs in 07. I used OE Showas that were valved and sprung for my weight and speed until 2000 when I switched to the Showa A Kit suspension, so all the bikes had the benefit of good to very good suspension ...

The VForce design doubles the reed surface over a stock setup. This results in improved flow even though the petals travel a shorter distance. VForce claims improved throttle response and more power along with longer reed petal life. From personal experience doing A/B comparisons, the VForce does he...

I was refering to the honda parts not the vforce having issues OK, that makes a lot more sense. I have definitely experienced QC issues with Honda castings. Looks like I didn't have any problems with the VForce and my 500 cylinder because EG matched the intake and exhaust to the reed and pipe flang...

I have dozens of 3s and each one is identical in dimension to the next. On my 500 with essentially a stock...
